Can you cut a 20 inch SKS barrel down to 16 without any adverse affects? Of course I would have it done professionally.

I assume you are excluding having to chop off the sights and bayonet lug off from the "adverse affects". I can't imagine an adverse effect otherwise.

Well, you just have somebody replace the front sight tower after you're done. They do it to AKs all the time.

Don't know if you could get it too much shorter, 'cause of the gas tube, but then, you can't legally shorten it more than four inches in any case.

My SKS is a Norinco Para, which has had the barrel chopped down to 16" at the factory. It works just fine, although for a non-factory chop-job you'd have to have a competent 'smith reseat the front sight assembly.

On the subject of choped barrels. What does it mean to "crown" the barrel. Is this a way to clear the burr that has been kicked into the barrel or is there more to it?

I'd be prepared to open up the gas port slightly if needed. This is a pretty common thing to do when shortening FAL barrels to a carbine length.

I woud anticipate that the weapons were designed to use plenty of gas to operate the system, still, one can never know until he tries.

SKS will need no port mods ehwn shortening.

I shortened my Yugo to 16.5". amd absolutely love it.
