canada ammo prices/legality?

i have heard that canadians have less strict guns laws
or used to at least, anyhow im relatively near the border and was wondering if they have better deals on ammo (such as import banned mass produced commie ammo etc) and if so is it worth the trip and legal?

You're SOL.

You will need a non resident firearms decleration of PAL to buy ammo in Canada. That's not impossible. But then, you'll need to get ATF approval in advance for the import (form 6). Additionally the ammunition needs to be LEGAL to import into the USA. Pretty sure you'll have PR tax liability and customs that won't help the price either.
