My brother lives in Canada and would like to come to the US to buy ammo and take it back with him. Apparently it is relatively easy to do from a Canadian law perspective, he just has to obtain the proper paperwork. Does anyone know if US law prevents someone from doing this? My gut reaction would be no, given that there are few controls on ammo in the US, and also that when you drive back across the border, you don't have to stop at the US side, just the Canadian side. But, better to be safe than sorry. Thanks.

I think the rule was 2K rounds at a time. And aiui it has to be on the approved list of ammos, or else you have to supply the gov't a bunch of it for testing, and they flat-out refuse to test any corrosive ammo anymore.

I would check with Customs and Border Protection. Tell them everything including the quantity. You may have to file an export declaration with US Customs. Part of the proper paper work in Canada might be a US export dec.

Ok, I did a little searching, and found a government agency that was suprisingly responsive. I was initially told that an export license is required. I then had the followoing email exchange:

What if the person wanting to take the ammunition into Canada is a Canadian citizen, not a US citizen? Because he is permitted, as far as I know, to buy ammunition in the US, if he has the appropriate import license, can he drive across the border with the ammunition he has purchased? I think his license allows him to take no more than 5,000 rounds into Canada. Would he still need to obtain an export license from DDTC?

They replied:

He may have an import authorization from Canada, BUT yes, he needs an export license issued by DDTC. However, he cannot obtain an export license personally because he is not a US person. He would have to find a registered US defense exporter to handle the transaction for him and obtain the license to export. Some exporters registered with DDTC are listed on the web. As an example (no endorsement or recommendation is stated or implied) see the attached list from the Gunbroker.com website.

So, it appears that if my brother wants to take ammo into Canada, we have to find a registered defense exporter. I may know of someone who is, so this may be no problem.

BTW, there is an exception for a US citizen to take up to 1,000 rounds for personal use for hunting or competition, but that doesn't apply given that it's not for my personal use, but for his.

PS, if I lived closer to the Canadian border, I'd look into becoming a registered defense exporter. I have dual citizenship, so I could get the Canadian import authorization, and the US export authorization, and start selling ammo in Canada.

What is needed to bring hunting ammo from Canada into the US?

Someone who wishes to bring firearms or ammunition into the US ("temporarily import", for hunting or competition) has to obtain a Form 6 Non-Immigrant Alien (NIA) permit from BATFE to do so; it takes about 3 months from when you send the paper in.
