It seems that there is always something new on the market. :D
Canik...The national Turkish arms maker, has 2 new (to me) pistols, one, the TP9SA , and the other, the 55, or T100, which is said to be a (sort of) copy of a compact CZ75.

The low prices, in the $300s, would seem to be to get Camiks noticed in the U.S. market.

My question is: How good can they be for ~$300?
The TP9SA is said to be tested to 65,000 rounds, and the 55, one I have actually handled feels just right in my hands, about like the Ruger SR9, but I have seen no information on it.

Does anyone have experience with either, or know something about them?
Thanx

There are reviews, pictures and tuning tips on the Original CZ forum. Seems many folks like them as an alternative for CZ. CGW (Cajun Gun Works) does refinements for that platform.

My first impression of Canik is and was not a good one. The first pistol I saw they made was the Canik 55 TP-9. A blatent copy of my beloved Walther P99. Seeing and reading about other pistols in their line show they copy other designs as well. Call it brand loyalty but I would rather pay more for assured quality in a defensive firearm.

I have three Caniks, a Stingray, and two C100's. Finally had a slight problem with one. It had never been fully cleaned and oiled just the bore cleaned. I did this on purpose to see how the C100 would do. About 400 rounds with no issues then had to gently push the slide forward on two rounds. Time to give it a good cleaning. I also have CZ75B and seem to shoot it less that the C100.

I have a Canik 100. Swapped out the springs for some from Cajun. I think it's a good gun for the money. Mine has been very reliable with factory hardball and HPs.

Had several TP9SA guns, including one personally. Awesome pistols! They were always very nice in terms of fit and finish and mine was 100% reliable. It shot high for me, but that was my only complaint. Highly recommend the TP9SA.

I think they are a good buy, I just have no need for another 9mm hi cap pistol with a striker. I have 6 others that I paid more money for, so I can't see buying a cheaper one to replace a gun with excellent credentials like Glock, Walther or H&K, nor would I sell any of my higher quality guns to carry a cheaper one, so I personally have no use for it.
Perhaps if you needed a spare.
It needs more of a track record as far as my thoughts go, I would not trust it for carry yet.

I want to keep a gun in my car, but don't want to put an expensive pistol through the heat & humidity in the summer months. I clean my pistols and lube them but I'm not going to get upset if a $275.00 pistol get a spot of rust on it.

I've had several myself. Still have the C100 and L120. Both have been flawless in the reliability department after a few thousand rounds. Honestly, I feel like I got a great deal on every Canik pistol I've ever bought.

My one complaint? I had to drift the back sight on one that shot 2' from center from the factory. Afterwards it has worked great.

They're very popular with CZ fans, myself included.

I've been coming across reports on them for a couple years now, and they are almost universally positive, often HIGHLY positive.
A good old shooting buddy of mine, who's a much more skilled and knowledgable pistolero than I am, bought one last spring (kind of a CZ/baby Eagle clone), and he's been raving about it. I got to shoot it a little myself, and I thought it was outstanding. I was amazed at what a slick little pistol it was for the money he had in it.
As I've read several times before, these are apparantly one of those well-kept secrets in firearms, but when they eventually start catching on, prices will predictably climb, so best to take advantage now.

I saw a video somewhere a few months ago - don't ask me where - I have no idea where I saw it. At any rate, it was a video about the incredible, brand new high-tech CNC machines that Turkish gun makers are using these days. It was very impressive. It got me looking at and handling some of the guns at my local store. I've been very impressed with the fit and finish... and whether they're copies of other designs or not, they look like fine pistols to me. Taking that into account along with positive reviews I've read, I wouldn't have a problem buying one, especially at the prices they're asking.

I've always been a "top-tier" gun owner, for lack of a better term. Then I bought a CZ, which mysteriously multiplied in my safe and lo-and-behold... I had 2 CZs! That just demonstrates to me that we need to have an open mind occasionally and give something new a chance.

CZ Clone Club

I'm late to the party on this discussion but feel compelled to post a comment. I have the two TriStar (Canik55) C100's, one in 380 Auto and the other in 9mm. Both guns are outstanding in every respect, highly recommended. My next purchase might be the C100 in 40 S&W. I also have a CZ-75BD but opted to get the C100 in 9mm at a significantly lower price point for what I consider the same gun as the CZ compact.

Go here to see what poster are saying about the CZ clones, Turkish and/or Italian versions:

I couldn't be happier with my TP9SA. It's a well made pistol for an awesome price.
Sometime you really do get more than you pay for. This is one of those deals.

I have a TP9 V2 on the way.

Hickok45 had an interesting video on the Canik TP9SA;

http://youtu.be/vUlZK7cJKXA

He states that the T&E gun he got from Bud's Gun Shop shot high with Fed Amrican Eagle 124 gr. FMJ ammo, which is very neutral shooting ammo in every one of my own 9mm's. He raised another point about the grip angle. He does mention that the trigger pull is exceptional for such a low priced gun, which is consistent with what I've heard about these.

In general, I don't agree with everything he says in his videos, but he is usually entertaining anyway.

I just picked up my Canik TP9V2 from my FFL and the trigger is indeed interesting. The single action seems about the same as my TP9SA. I'm taking it to the range tomorrow to break in (along with my newly acquired NAA Pug) and I'm expecting it to be just as reliable as the TP9SA.

I own a Canik 55 Stingray C and though budsgunshop pulled a bait and switch with me. (they had older model with adjustable sights, chrome, said night sights) When it arrived it was black, no chrome barrel, fixed 3 dot sights and budsgunshop told me that stock was subject to change and that i was welcome to get 25$ off my next purchase with no option to exchange i was pretty heated.

but thats off topic, the Stingray is AWESOME. I shoot 4 inch steel targets at 25 yards standing pretty reliably and it is my daily carry. Have yet to have one malfunction yet and didnt clean it or lube it until after 500 rounds. They come with 2 Mecgear mags too. Just an excellent pistol.

I did one mod to it, which is i went to cajungunworks and bought the 17$ spring replacement set and it lightened up the double action pull by about half. Its super smooth. Best pistol I ever bought brand new for under 400$ including shipping, FFL, and spring kit.

Canik 55 C-100

I've had one of these nice CZ clones for some time and have near 1,000 down then tube with never a problem. They do seem to shoot a bit low and to the left though this possibly my own fault. I aim for center mass and hit right at 8 o'clock, consistantly. Aiming at 2 o'clock puts me dead center.

Quality of machining is great though there is a bit of gritty feel at first in DA. It has gone away with time.

The factory is a NATO spec facility so I have no problem with their quality.

Most CZ Compact holsters fit just fine though I do carry mine in a UBG rig. Nate does good work AND, he's a former Marine.

i have TP9SA and while I was shooting 1911's and TT-33's my whole life, I finally have switched to Canik as my primary SD weapon instead of beloved 1911 jam-o-matic
it took me some time to get used to wider grip, different angle, and longer trigger travel, but gun is flawless and accurate as 1911
