I am looking into buying a safe here in the next few weeks. I have narrowed it down to two safes. The Cannon AE35 and the grey 1 hr safe. I can't remember the number on it, but it's the size of a AE22 I think, but with a 1 hr protection.

Anyways, the grey safe is 799.00 and the AE35 is 887.00 The Grey safe holds 28 guns and has a 1 hr fireproof time on it where the AE35 holds 30 and only 30 minute fireproofing. Is the extra 30 minutes worth the cost for a smaller safe?

BTW, these safes are at Academy.

Residential Security Containers, not Safes. :)

Also, it depends largely on how much you anticipate a fire, how close you are to a fire department, where the safe is located in the house (exposure to possible/probably fire locations/hotspots).

I don't think anyone anticipates a fire...LOL. Well, I'm about 3 to 5 minutes away from a fire station. The safe would be located on the outside back wall of the house about 6 ft from a window.

There is no such thing as a gunsafe that is too big! I am not sure but I think that both safes are 12g steel(less than 1/8") Fire ratings on inexpensive safes are unreliable. I would go with the larger safe.

I thought you bought a new cannon and needed a safe for it :mad:
I was looking forward to some pictures of your new cannon.

If you can find some old Mil-surp safes from old black programs they will work also. I have one and while its rated ALOT longer than most commercial stuff, its also ALOT heavier. Like 600lbs for even a moderately small unit.
good luck

Partyguy;

Unless and until you know the exact parameters and procedures of the thermal protection testing done to both safes, you can't make a meaningful comparison. Good luck finding the information, I seriously doubt you'll get anything more than ad-speak spin in either case.

For what its worth... I have a Cannon and am having a serious issue getting any warranty attention... even on something they already told me I would get get fixed under warranty.

What issue are you having. From what I've read, they seem to have one of the best warranty's out there.

How can you people seriously think I was wanting a safe for a cannon? :confused:

Borrowed from the movie "Tommy Boy"

Me: Let's think about this for a sec, Mr. Safe Buyer, why would somebody put a guarantee on a safe? Hmmm, very interesting.

Mr. Safe Buyer: Go on, I'm listening.

Me: Here's the way I see it, Mr. Safe Buyer. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a safe 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.

Mr. Safe Buyer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.

Me: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little safe in the corner of your bedroom at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Mr. Safe Buyer?

Mr. Safe Buyer: What's your point?

Me: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.

Mr. Safe Buyer: But why do they put a guarantee on the safe?

Me: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of sh*t. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

A1abdj;

My man, you have now achieved veteran status. You're now sounding like the cynical old bastich I am!

My Cannon is over 20 years old, no electronics and absolutely no fire deterrence.

That said, its already earned its keep by denying some burglars the goods. LMAO!

I lagged the base and the back of the safe into the joists and the spot the safe is in is impossible to get to the sides of the safe, unless you plan to demo the house, which would take time not afforded by the dog and the monitored alarm w/fire sensors.

Let 'em come back, we welcome the free dog food, she's a big girl. :)
