I recently set out to turn my old Winchester 1200 into a defense shotty. I got a speed feed stock and forearm, extended magazine, and a 20" barrel. The barrel i purchased was from a Mod 1300 Ranger. From all that I had read, the 1200 and 1300 barrels are interchangeable (except for the 1300 defender)
Everything fits ok, the magazine takes all 7 rounds of 2 3/4 shells, and the slide and bolt function as you would expect...

The problem is that I can't chamber a round. The shell will exit the magazine, come up and enter the chamber but the bolt will not grab the shell and fully close. i have about a 3/4" to go before it is fully closed. I can't think of what is or could be wrong. And to top it off, the barrel is made for 2 3/4 and 3" shells and I am using the 2 3/4 rounds to test it.

Anyone got any ideas????? I'm stumped :banghead:

My first suggestion would be to try another brand of shells.

Another idea is that there could be several causes, including a buildup of plastic or gunk in the chamber (if the barrel is used). If you remove the barrel and try to drop a shell in, does it go?

the barrel is fine, I cleaned it all up before it went on my 1200 receiver. :)

and yes, the shell will drop in and seat in the chamber with the barrel off.

I'm just firing wildly here, but is the extractor getting over the rim okay. It could be crud between the back of the extractor and breech block...I had one of them a while back for jump shootin birds....It was such a mess of a feed mech,I figure if you had one for defense it might best serve as a suicide method if/when the scene goes to the criminals favor. Thats why when folk around here are looking for defense, they try to pick up an early 70's wingmaster to convert....With real estate its location location location. With defense its dependable dependable dependable

I dont think that is the issue. I have had the gun for about 15 yrs and never once has it failed me. I am anal about cleaning. I will though, go home and check the extractor tonight.

If I understand you correctly this barrel is new to the gun ? Try putting the old barrel back on and if that resolves the problem do a close comparison of the barrel extensions. Does the bolt close completely on the new barrel if there is no shell ? Also check to make sure the front of the ejector is properly in its slot.

It still functions flawlessly with the original barrel.
The bolt closes completely with a shell in the chamber. The extractor is seated correctly. I'm at a loss. I think I need to see a gunsmith.
