So local gun store has a nickel 4" 19 and a nickel 6" 586. Both are in great shape, the 19 seems to have nicer grips (coke?). Anyway, what is the advantage of one over the other?

I'm leaning toward the 586 because of the stronger frame, but need help from the masters. Will be a range gun or leave it in the truck gun.

If you are going to shoot a lot of mags, get the newer model. On the other hand there ain't gonna be anymore 19's

I have a nickle 4" Model 19.:)

586 in nickle

They arent making any more of those either :)

That gun would have the older internals made of tool steel and the hammer nose firing pin, Stronger frame, its the best of both worlds and would also have the lifetime service policy to boot.

How much are they asking??

If you plan on carrying it a lot and shooting it some, get the 19, If you are just going to plink at the range and haul it around in the truck get the 586.
Depending on the Dash number of the 19 it might be worth more else where.

Personally, I'd get the 19, but you might not if you just intend on shooting it and want to fire a lot of hot stuff through it. I shoot a lot of .38 stuff in my .357s and carry with magnums, fire a few mags now and then just to get my testosterone flowing. :D But, the K frame 19, while it doesn't seem all that much lighter when you pick it up, will ride on the hip a lot lighter on a long day's hike in the mountains. That's why I like the K frame guns, same reason old Bill Jordan thought they were the cat's meow. And, as was said, the 19 is no longer made. But, I have a friend with a 686 and it is a great shooter. You cannot go wrong IMHO if the 19 is tight and in good shape. I'd give $350 for one in good shape, not a problem!

I'll be doing a test of several revolvers this afternoon testing accuracy, speed, ease of shooting, etc. One of the guns is a 19 and one is a 686. I'll let you know what I find out.
Also being tested: Colt Diamondback, Colt Police Positive Mk V, S&W M27, S&W M67. All in 4".
Wish I could have got hold of a Python.

well since I already have a 6" King Cobra, thought the 4" was the way to go.

Pinned and recessed 19-4, sn 51K45xx (I think) Date?

Needs a bit of flitz, but it's in GREAT shape.

The M19 probably has Targets on it but not Cokes (Cokes were only for N-frames). For a leave it in the truck gun the nickel finish on them will get plenty of little scratches. So it will come down to how it will be used and personal preference in the balance and feel.

Its said that when Bill Jordan envisioned the Combat Magnum (Model 13/19), he proposed a lighter carry gun, sionce the LEO carries WAY more than he shoots. He also recommended practice with .38's and .357 mag for carry duty. I dont know, John Taffin said it.

Some say the Mod 19 will handle all the hot mag you want, others cast doubts. I say get the one that strikes your fancy the most.

I've got a 19 and love it. I've been thinking about getting a 586/686, too, for the longer barrel. I'd probably get the 19 first and lay-away the 586. Play with them both and sell the one you don't want. You'll probably want to keep them both, though.

Decisions, decisions. :D

Good purchase I know it would have been a hard decision for me. The overriding factor in my last purchase was how it was going to be used. You could not have gone wrong with either of these. I have wanted a 19 for a long time and have not had the gun for sale and the money at the same time. Enjoy.

Git the 19 and shoot all you want of .357 or .38. I got one blued and it is a life time shooter. 4" barrel makes for easier packing. If all you are going to do is kill paper down at the range then go with the 586.:)

If you want to carry it a lot, buy the 19. If you want to shoot it a lot, buy the 586.

And if I didn't live in this god-forsaken state I'd tell you to buy both and sell the 19 to me. The 19, you see, is not safe... :fire:
