I've had a MK III 22/45 for several months but have not taken it all the way apart. It's had a few thousand rounds through it now and I'm trying to get the barrel/receiver off to clean it. I've been whacking it with a rubber mallet but it just won't budge. Any ideas for what I can do?

Have you removed the bolt yet ? If so which end of the barrel are you whacking ? You should be whacking the back of the barrel. Sorry if I am telling you what you already know.

Not the rear of the gun, you need to whack the rear of the *barrel*.

Just in case your statement really reflects what you are doing...

Had the same problem with mine at first.

1) make sure you're whacking it in the right direction.
2) make sure your mallet is rubber, because--
3) brace the part that needs to stay stationary (I believe the receiver moves forward off the frame) on the padded edge of a table and
4) whack it harder.

They are exceedingly tight the first time or two.

On my MKII (basically the same gun), I had to get a weighted polymer hammer, the rubber mallet wasn't cutting it, it was just too soft. Also, even after disassembling it countless times over 25 years (got it in '86), it still requires a pretty good whack with the hammer. If I hadn't done it so many times, I would be uncomfortable hitting it so hard.
