I don't know how many of you are aware of the thread on the Open Range about caps & nipples.
Mako put up a nice article with pics on the topic.
Quite interesting!

So.........Since Remington #10 & #11 caps have the same inside diameter (#10s have a deeper cup) & since I was looking to up my stash of caps, I decided to give #11s a try.

So I start looking -- OH MY, how the price of caps have risen........................

Then the clouds parted and I found that Gamaliel has them for $45 per thousand + free shipping (you gotta pay the hazmat fee though).

http://www.gamaliel.com/percussioncaps/remington-11-percussion-caps.asp

So...............................I bought 5000 at $44 per thousand.

They have #10s in stock too, but I have 7 or 8000 of those.
I'll see how the #11s do.

If yer looking for caps, they have a nice supply.
Might be a good time to stock up at a good price.

Thank. I'm running low on em too. Dang prices went way up since I last bought em.

Cowboyshooterssupply.com has Remington #10 (and I presume #11s too) for $3.50/1000 + hazmat. HOWEVER(!) The caps are the GREEN label, gold foil standard caps of yore (not the "new 40% hotter" caps in the "brown label" tin). I still bought 5K and so far no probs but only shot one match with them. In the past I have probably shot at least 10,000 of them with rarely a hitch. Best deal other than Gamaliel who had the brown label the last time I ordered caps from them.

I went shooting with these older Remington #10 caps that appear to be the same as those being sold by http://cowboyshooterssupply.com/reloading_supplies.html at the reduced price.
And similar to the older green & white tins of Remington #10 golden caps, they needed to be pinched to fit snug on the nipples of my Pietta 1858 Remington.
However the newer current 40% hotter #10 caps fit these same Pietta 1858 nipples with a perfectly snug fit.
So these older #10's in the thumbnail below are sized like #11's.
I figure that these must have been interim caps that were produced in between the old Remington golden caps and the current 40% hotter caps, but still using oversize dies that Remington use to make their #10 golden caps with. And maybe also an interim green primer mixture that still wasn't labeled as being 40% hotter yet.
Other than their size and needing to be pinched they worked just fine.

Post #9 below has photos of an older Remington Golden cap tin:

Hellgate, don't you mean $3.50/100?

I only live 10 miles from Brisco Kid and Kiamichi Queen. Good folks to do business with. KQ and I were school teachers at Valliant way back when.

OOOOOOOOPPPPS!! Uhhhh, yeah! I'll correct that. I guess I thought it was such a good deal that l didn't proof read. Thanks for catching it. Sheesh! I guess I'm no longer in my prime.

(60 second pause)

It won't let me edit. Caps are $3.50/100 from Cowboyshttoerssupply.com
