Hey guys and gals of THR

I have narrowed my next purchase down to a Mech-tech CCU in .45acp or an .45acp upper for my bushmaster

My question is ..................is there any ammunition specially loaded for carbine type .45 with slower burning powder for better performance out of 20 inch barrels? While I am able to reload my self I was just wondering why ammunition companies wouldnt offer such an item.

and this just came to mind.....If I go with the ar upper should I go with a modified mag well or a mag well insert??

thanks for your input

Good question Rusher. I remember reading an article testing a .45 ACP carbine. What was interesting is that the .45 ACP was the only pistol caliber that tended to lose velocity out of a carbine tube. It seems the .45 ACP ammo is tuned pretty darn well and gets the most out of a short barrel. I think it was the 230 gr loads that lost the most. I'd try some 185 gr +P stuff out of the long gun. Let us know what you end up doing.

It does seem like light fast pistol ammo does best out of the carbine length barrels. 115 gr 9mm and 125gr .357 seem show a lot of improvement. I remember reading a test somewhere where even 147gr. 9mm actually lost velocity.

I for one would love to see some of those light, fast 45ACP rounds chrono'd out of a carbine.

Go with the MechTech upper, you'll love it. It's just plain fun to shoot. I've got one myself.

Problem with .45 in a carbine loading is that there are entirely too many old, old pistols out there so a carbine loading would probably create serious problems in these old guns.

If you reload, you could tailor your loads to your carbine. Would it be possible to create a carbine load that isn't any hotter, pressure wise, than SAAMI specs for the standard .45?

I keep Aguila IQ in the 1911. Out of the 1911 the 117 grain aluminum alloy bullet does around 1500FPS. I think that stuff would rock coming out of a mech tech CCU. Personally, i can't wait for the beretta/taurus CCU to be ready. My taurus can feild strip in litterally 3 seconds. You could probably transition from pistol to carbine in less than 10. The 65 grain IQ round in the 9mm rips out at 1600FPS, i would anticipate mind blowing (figuratively and litterally  ) speeds out of the carbine.

For a hot-rod autoloading .45 cartridge, you might consider .45Super and/or .460 Rowland. I know that Mech-Tech IS offering the CCU's in the .460 chambering, which gives you .44Mag performance even in a pistol-length barrel, let alone a carbine barrel. What I DO NOT know is whether the standard .45ACP CCU can be fired safely AND reliably with .45Super, which would get you within a couple hundred FPS of the Rowland loads.

thanks for the feed back ....sounds like it will be the CCU.....now the big Q.... seen any good deals around......$285 minus shipping was the best Ive seen so far.

anymore guidance would be greatly appreciated..
