Short news story. Isaac Wilson apparently shot a Steve Dodson in the knee in the course of Dodson allegedly carjacking Wilson.

Wilson had just pulled his new Jaguar into a gas station at 25th and Keystone in Indianapolis. Dodson, an individual with a long criminal history, approached Wilson feigning a pistol in his jacket pocket.

Wilson who according to GIMP (Greater Indianapolis Police Department) is a licensed pistol carrier inserted one round of unknown caliber into Dodson's knee. Dodson was taken to a nearby hospital.

No arrests were reported at this point by GIMP.

I can't resist, and I will say I am sorry up front, but how appropriate is it that

GIMP arrested and took into custody a an Scumbag who how has a gimp! :D

Sorry, so bad, but I just can't help myself! :D :D :D

Update:

Police say car owner shot man trying to steal Jaguar

Indianapolis metropolitan police said a man who tried to steal a car at an Eastside service station was shot by the car's owner.

The would-be car thief was placed under arrest and sent to the hospital. The car's owner, Isaac Wilson, was questioned by detectives but not arrested. Police said they would submit the case to the Marion County prosecutor for a decision on charges.

Steven A. Dotson, 32, was arrested on a preliminary charge of attempted carjacking. Police said he was at a service station at 25th Street and Keystone Avenue when Wilson stopped for fuel in his Jaguar. When Dotson tried to take the Jaguar, Wilson pulled a gun and shot Dotson in the knee.

Police said Dotson was awake and in stable condition when he was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Carjacking sends suspect to hospital

Jan 26, 2007 05:42 AM EST, Carjacking and shooting

Isaac Wilson was gassing up his Jaguar when the carjacking occurred.

Isaac Wilson describes the ordeal to investigators.

David MacAnally/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - A suspected carjacker and career criminal picked the wrong victim Thursday night. Instead, the carjacker found himself facing the barrel of a gun.

It happened at a gas station at 25th Street and Keystone Avenue. One witness says she thought she was back in the old west.

"Some guy tried to take my car," says motorist Isaac Wilson. He fears the guy may have wanted to take something else. "I felt he was going to try to shoot me."

Wilson just gassed up his Jaguar and pulled over to take a cell phone call when another man got out of another car and seemed to me pointing from inside his clothes something Wilson thought was a gun.

That man ordered Wilson out of his car, he says. After Wilson got out of the car the suspect got in then Wilson ordered the carjacker to get out.

Police say the carjacker came toward Wilson making like he had a gun.

"That's why I pulled my gun," says Wilson.

Wilson fired once hitting the carjacker in the knee.

"It was hard to believe, like in the cowboys," said one witness.

"I heard the shot," said another man fueling up nearby. "I was looking in that direction and I heard the guy saying 'stop.'"

Suspect Stephen Dodson is a career criminal. He is in fair condition at the hospital.

Police are also questioning Dodson's girlfriend. They want to know if she was waiting down the block to pick up the suspect's Chevy once he stole the Jag.

"It's scary you know, I had to take cover myself," said one witness.

Another told Eyewitness News "if he did try and take his car you get what you deserve because to many of us are out working and those are the kind of people who need to get a job."

"I was acting in self-defense," says Wilson. We asked if he hopes that sends a message to other bad guys. "I hope so."

Prosecutors will review the shooting as a routine. Police say Issac Wilson had the handgun legally. They did not find a gun on the suspect.

Given that the bad guy was unfortunately still alive, I like the fact that he was awake as he was taken to the hospital. I just hope the doctors took a long time to get some pain meds in him. That has got to hurt!

yeah, that guy needs more range time and should have double tapped. I guess that's Indy's way of knee capping someone as compared to Jersey's :)

I wonder if he will be charged by the prosecution. The owner shot the perp after the owner “got out of the car walked away, and then walked back.” I hope the indy DA leaves this one alone, especially after they didn’t file attempted murder charges on the individual that shot up his fellow co-workers because “he wasn’t shooting to kill”.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16662251/

Indianapolis - An Indianapolis man accused of shooting four co-workers won't face attempted murder charges. Jason Burnam allegedly opened fire at Crossroads Industries last week.

When Burnam carried a gun into his workplace, with an extra ammo clip and shot four co-workers, prosecutors say he was out to hurt, but not to kill.

Helen Marchal with the Prosecutors office says "The facts we have currently show Mr. Burnam was trying to hurt people but we see no evidence that he was trying to kill them."

When Eyewitness News talked to the suspect's mother last week, she said he opened fire because he was picked on by fellow workers.

Court papers show the suspect planned his attack. He bought the gun a few days before at a pawn shop. Then he showed up early at work, waiting for his four targets as they gathered in a breakroom and elsewhere and opened fire hitting four people in the legs.

"She thought he was going to kill her" said one victim in court papers.

So why not file attempted murder charges in this case? Well, in the 911 call, one witness describes the shooter firing into the ceiling and into victims' legs.

"This was a hard case," says the Deputy Prosecutor. "There are a lot of facts to be sorted out like Mr. Burnam's mental capacity."

"I don't want to talk about that right now," said one victim by phone. She's now back at work but says, "No, I'm not doing okay. I'm seeing a therapist and I'm in the middle of things right now."

"We've had counselors available to them every day," says Jim Vento with Easter Seals Crossroads.

Vento had no comment on the charges, which are still pretty stiff. Four counts of aggravated battery plus criminal recklessness and possession of a handgun without a permit. Whatever happens to the suspect, Crossroads hopes the system helps the gunman.

"Our concern is that the system insure that the appropriate mental health services that are necessary are given to him or availed to him," Vento said.

The suspect's mother says he fired after teasing from other workers but Crossroads says no one there reported any teasing. Burnam has a court appearance Wednesday morning to face the formal charges.

Wilson who according to GIMP ...

No arrests were reported at this point by GIMP...

C'mon now, I know merging the IPD and Sheriff's was a stupid idea but no need for name calling. It's IMPD, (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) not GIMP.

Sheesh.

Good!
I sure hope no charges will be pressed against the victim in this case.
Perp got exactly what he deserved!!!

Why is this thread titled "carjacker shot dead?"

because the OP didn't have all the details when he posted. More info became available later.

Not bashing the OP, just mentioning that (like newscasters) we probably should wait for the full story before posting on THR :neener:

(and yes, I've done it too so I'm not being HTTA)

Now comes the civil lawsuit.

I highly doubt that the criminal, charged with attempted carjacking, would try anything remotely close to this.

You have to remember where this happened. We have very strong pro-gun, pro self-defense laws on the books that keep "us" safe.

This is another great reason I skipped over IL from living in IA and will NEVER go back! The same thing in IA would be subject to a civil suit of some sort for sure. IL is out of the question, as you would already be in jail! Here you would really have to search for a lawyer that would even listen to that idea.

It will be out of the news and long gone in a day....

Back in the old West??

You have a shooting, a carjacking, and the best you can come up with is "drama queen" remarks from witnesses?

I wuz so skeered, I thot I wuz a gonner!

Never mind stuff like, "tried to steal his Jaguar, a car noted for it's higher-than-average theft risk in this area."

Or, "a career criminal, his resume including assault, armed robbery, burglary, and selling drugs."

Or even, "shot his assailant with a Beretta 3032 Tomcat (.32 calibre autopistol), a well-respected and reliable self-defense weapon, popular among citizens wishing to avoid becoming victims."

Journalism: ad-hoc drama, on a stick.

+1 Arfin.
