Carjacking scenario...

I'd like to start shooting like a cowboy. However, the fact is that by shooting, you are probably more likely to injure or kill someone as the person driving your car. I would only advise shooting if the person was recklessly driving the car and he was an immenent threat to innocent bystanders and/or yourself. If he just came to jack the car and flee, I suggest that you immediately report the carjacking to the police. They will get the car soon enough. Plus, there won't be bullet holes all through it.

Would this fall under "bloodlust"?

What about attempting a citizens arrest?

Draw mine while he's distracted starting my car... warn him to get the hell out of it... and shoot if he does something stupid?

As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing to stop him from shooting me through a window after the car starts--and if my enemies are dumb enough to turn their attention, I'd hope I'm quick enough to take advantage.

It isn't "armed robbery--stop---cartheft". It is one continuous crime, involving an armed criminal, as a result I feel my life would still be in danger.

If there's available cover (engine block of a nearby vehicle), maybe ducking behind it would be better... but that would take more time than drawing and firing, and would expose myself to fire while moving to it.

Besides "He's not fleeing the scene of this crime, he's driving to the next one"

It isn't a case of defense of property. When the carjacker pointed the gun at you, it became fear for your life time. Just because he momentarily changes his point of aim as he gets in the car, does not remove the threat to your life...
Ok, sounds valid....
Would the same argument hold water if a guy robbed you at gunpoint (taking your wallet) and, by the time you were able to draw and aim, he was swiftly fleeing the scene? If he is running away, is your life still in danger? How does it work to defend your reason (in court) for shooting the criminal in the back? ...or shooting the CJ while his gun is sitting on the passenger seat?

I don't know. Just as quickly as you must make the decision to shoot to defend your life, you also need to decide to not-shoot, because there is not a real threat at that second. I am not exaggerating. I really think that the decision making does come down to "that second".

In the original scenario, I think I would opt to drawing my gun at the same time that I quickly ran for cover.

This is one of those rare cases where I think more gun control is needed...in the form of more range time.

If you can enlighten the rest of us as to how to positively determine the intentions of a criminal with a gun, I'm sure we'd all be very appreciative. Such a talent would be useful in a variety of applications beyond carjackings.
