we have had a couple of carjacking at gunpoint here the last couple of days
here is the question if someone carjacks you at gunpoint do you draw & shoot thru your door or do you give up your car and hope that they just drive off
would it even be legal to just shoot them thru the door claming you feared for your life?

Why shoot?

Your at the wheel of a 2000+ pound weapon.

Just take your foot off the brake and drive away.

It's a situational awareness thing.

Make sure you leave yourself enough space to maneuver your car and watch for folks walking up to it.

If they've already drawn on you, and you have yourself boxed in - give up the car. Trying to draw and shoot will probably get you shot and give them a new gun to go with the new car.

If you have to stop at a light, make sure you can at least see the tire's of the car in front of you on the pavement, and always think about your escape route if you need it.

Personally, I'd see if there was a certain area that they jackings occured, then not go there.

IN GENERAL, that's a good idea, but in practice, not always possible. I've been in traffic on Ashland Ave. in Chicago where traffic allowed me nowhere to go, regardless of how much space I left in front. As a matter of fact, on one such occasion, a guy threw a chunk of concrete through the passenger side window of the woman in the car next to me, reached in and stole her purse.

This is a question with at least 50 different answers, depending upon where you are. And more, depending upon the exact situation. Check the laws in your state, county, and city. Best thing to do is to get training. Good training includes "when to use deadly force" tailored to the laws in your locale. Also check out http://gunlaws.com for annotated gun laws, in plain English and word-for-word. Know the laws in your state.
