So I'm pretty bored tonight and came up with a question that I thought I'd run past people. I'm waiting on a shoulder rig for my 9mm to use when I travel to more friendly states. It holds 16 rounds a mag. The shoulder rig carries 2 spares on the strong side. I was tempted to just get 1 spare but everyone says the extra weight helps balance things out anyway.

It got me thinking. Between the gun and the 1st spare mag thats 33 rounds available and it seems quite unlikely I would ever need anywhere near that. I normally carry ra9t (147gr). Is there any merit to loading one of the mags with fmj or bonded rounds? It seems to me like when you start talking about barrier performance you're talking more about leo's and less about what i'd need to worry about. The only exception I can think about was the guy in the car at unc trying to run people over.

So what would you guys do, if you already have 33 rounds of your jhp of choice and get another 16 for free? Make it 48 of your jhp of choice? Go for something with a bit more penetration?

In .45, I carry the same in all my mags . . . 230 grain hardball (don't mess with success!! ).

When I carry my 9mm BHP, I typically carry the arm charged with 115 gr. Federal JHPs (standard pressure; no +Ps for me & my Browning). I usually have one spare mag of the same load, and a second spare mag of 115 gr. FMJs.

In the (extremely unlikely) event I am trapped in an extended fight, and exhaust both mags of JHPs, and am still alive :what: , I'll almost certainly be behind cover, and using that last mag v-e-r-y carefully! I figure FMJs will serve adequately. In the (only slightly less unlikely) event I am pressed to engage an assailant who has also had the bad taste to take cover, the 9mm FMJ has a fair rep for penetrating light cover.

Of even greater use is the opportunity to expound on my tactical-ness !! :D
