Well, I've always heard arguments saying A.) "Always carry spare mags in mag holsters, ALWAYS!" B.)" Meh, who cares if you carry the magazine in your pocket, a piece of lint isn't going to make a difference."

and C.) "Either way is fine."

Well, I was always a fan of C.).

Most of the time I would use my single mag carrier to carry a spare mag, and any other mags would go into the most convenient empty pocket.

It seemed fine for a while, but lately I've noticed a few things:

1.) Sure, a piece of lint isn't going to jam the crap out of your gun, but what about a dime that sneaks its way between the noses of your first two rounds? I had this happen to me while carrying a spare magazine in a pocket. I had no idea that the dime was there, either.

2.) I started to notice that if I walked around long enough, a round might pop out of the magazine, or portrude just enough to prevent insertion of the magazine.

3. most important) I was practicing swift reloads with my mag carriers, and I've gotten pretty quick. I didn't usually practice reloading from a pocket, but today I decided to try it.

Every stinking time I snatched the spare mag out of my pocket, I would end up trying to shove it into the mag well with the bullet noses facing the back-strap of the gun. Every time.

Not only does this add a little extra time to the reload, it forces you to take your eyes off of whatever you're looking at and orient your magazine.
Or maybe the magazine could be possibly wedged into the well if rammed in hard enough.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I've decided against carrying back up magazines in my pockets, ever.

What say you, THR?

That is very true.

Honestly though, with my HBE mag holster I have no reason not to.

You're definitely right, though; if you don't have a mag holster, then you gotta do what you gotta do. :)

I am seriously lacking in the area of holsters... so, I just kind of make due with some comfortable fitting IWB or kydex holsters... when I actually do get some money I will definitely invest in some decent leather though... it obviously makes all the difference in comfort and use when necessary..they will include areas for a spare mag or TWO...

You could have someone make a pocket mag holster. Makes perfect sense if you're pocket carrying the gun.

Both of my holsters have a specific compartment custom fit to the mags that are spare.

They are tapped twice daily. No worries.

If I ever need to use that many bullets (20 or if you prefer... 32 dollars worth) things are very bad.

When I pocket carry my gun, say in jeans or shorts, That pocket is completely empty except for the gun(in a Superfly holster). I have no room to put my pocket mag holster in my other jeans pocket. but a small mag will fit with my cell phone and chapstick in weakside pocket. wallet goes in back and money in other back pocket. I reach for my cell phone enough that I constantly check the mag and reposition it.
I think it is better than not carrying one at all...
When I carry on my hip, I always use a mag holster in weak side pocket. and that is normally empty except maybe chapstick.

Seriously, though, guys, try to do a really fast reload with your pocket magazine.

I think you'll be surprised with the results.

The smart carry has a pocket right there. The Uncle mike's a little bit slower because of the velcro cord.

Dropping a mag out of the M&P is fast.

A old IPSC trick ---- magnet in the pocket and stick the mag on outside . Or you can use a large paper-clip with magnet and clip it backwards on your belt.

BUT BEST IS A REAL MAG HOLDER -- lots of kinds includeing a "spring steel" type for 1911 mags.

EDIT --- by "paper-clip with magnet " I am talking about those thingamajigs that you stick on your fridge and clip papers to.

I use an 8 dollar magazine pouch from Uncle Mike's looks just like a pocket knife holder

If you carry a mag in the pocket, it makes sense to use a pocket mag pouch.

The holsters I've seen that incorporate a mag pouch as part of the holster, how, exactly, are you supposed to withdraw the mag to reload? I've had the "Pager Pal" guy demonstrate a cross-body reach with his left hand that most people wouldn't be able to do. I've seen others reach behind their back to barely grasp it, work it out some before they could firmly withdraw it fully. Still others swap hands, putting the gun in their weak hand while their strong hand goes to the mag then juggle the gun during the reload.

I prefer to keep the spare mag on the belt in a dedicated holder for it. Much quicker, much more sure.

I always carry one in my weak side pocket, and two if the gun is lower in capacity.

I can reload pretty fast from my pocket because the mag(s) is always the ONLY thing in that pocket.

I really wish Comp-Tac would make an M-Tac style dual mag carrier... :(

In fact, I think I'll go e-mail them now!

Anybody know of a good leather double mag pouch for 1911 mags?

I have a sig sauer polymer dealy that is just too bulky.

I have a Galco OWB model that works pretty well. I really wish somebody would make an IWB-type with a body shield, but the Galco model gets them decently close to the body without any extra bulk considering its an OWB carrier. I actually haven't tried it between the belt and pants as seen in the photo.

I have to ask, why carry a reload? If I have to reload after 9 rounds i'm in bad shape, and I don't plan for scenario where I have to engage multiple targets. I do carry a spare mag in my car with FMJ and load those up when I go hiking but besides that I don't see why to bother with a reload.

A few bucks buys a nylon web knife pouch at Wal Mart. Different sizes for diffrent magazines from 380 to double column 45 aCP.

I practice reloading a mag from my pocket. In the beginning I've stuck the mag in backwards a lot but with a little practice, I haven't had that problem.

I don't carry and extra mag, but would like to. I just don't have an extra mag to carry. When I get one, I'll carry it in a pocket.

Like the man said, I carry a reload more out of concern for malfunction (and who knows what may happen--there's a startling number of videos showing people accidentally ejecting their own magazine in the middle of a gunfight).

Besides, another mag is so easy to carry--especially a single stack--why not? That's like not buckling your seat belt. You probably won't need it but it's so easy, why not?
