In my .45: I load it with the classic. Winchester Whitebox 230 grain FMJ. That load has been planting people in the dirt since WWI. It's killed PLENTY of America's enemies, quite efficiently.

That load, dating back to the inception of the 1911 itself: has filled cemeteries with fascists, nationalists, totalitarians, socialists and communists. Of every skin color imaginable: in every environment imaginable and on every continent except Australia.

You can keep every rapid expansion, multi shot, break away projectile, hydro shock contraptions you want: those all work and they work just fine. Crush damage: is permanent damage and permanent internal disruption - not temporary. I never intend to have to deal with a potential threat: a second time.

That's just me, and I'm not saying the myriad of defensive ammunition to be found out there isn't capable: I'm saying the same load I use for defense has an exalted track record of stopping baddies. It also happens to be the same exact load I use for plinking and I don't feel like I'm being bent over a barrel every time I go to buy a box. You are otherwise -not- going to shoot your ultra high grade defensive ammo: on an idle Tuesday at the range.

I can, and it's fun.

There's something to be said for Old faithful.

Now if we're talking .44 special or .44 mag: 250 grain hard cast keith style LSWC. If you've never had the opportunity to actually examine the wound channel - it's disgusting. This huge glob of lead which does not want to deform right away: starts to tumble and yaw and want to continue it's rotation. The pitch deviates as it continues forward momentum it sprawls and when it does that it causes just tremendous internal damage along it's path. Worse yet the outer layers of lead flake and splinter off leaving debris throughout. It just shreds everything for about an inch around the entry hole along it's path internally.

Generally, I carry either

Winchester Ranger 147 grain JHP bonded or Remington 147 grain JHP Golden Saber. However, I have also carried Corbon and Speer Gold Dot.
