Carry in other States?

If you were going on vacation, would you still concealed carry in a state that does not have reciprocity with your state and that has strict carry laws, like ooooh say...California?

Were going out to visit my parents tomorrow in California for a couple weeks and I can't decide whether or not to take Tiny (my P32).

Your thoughts?

That's a personal decision that each person should make based on how much they value the risk of being limited in your defensive means versus the risk of you doing hard time and losing your rights to own another firearm again.

In short, no thanks. If possible, I'll avoid going to non-reciprocity states. If that's not an option, I'll take my chances being unarmed. I don't need to be the personal property of 'Bubba'.

I would do some research on that states laws:
1. Can You legally carry any kind of knife? Even a folding pocket knife beats being unarmed.
2. Invest in the best pepper spray that you can because it also beats being unarmed
3. More than anything else try not to look like a target, don't flash cash and be aware of your surroundings.

As OV said, it is a cost/benefit ratio that you need to work out for yourself. For me the cost of being discovered is too great to outweigh the benefit of having it in the places that I would be going to in the "bad" state.

I fully understand that it is ultimately my decision as to whether or not I want to take the chance, but I was simply asking if YOU would or not?

Personally, I tend to take chances sometimes that maybe I shouldn't, but it never hurts to get others opinion on the subject.

Personal decision one has to make. Like many here I have multiple permits. I have a" lockable container" that some states require if one must leave firearm in vehicle. I have also read links similar to the one pax listed above. I have also read a great article by lendsringer, which I can't find a link too.

I traveled many miles last fall and the only state I didn't have a pc of paper for was Ohio. I jsut returned from an out of state visit and legal to and fro. MO passing of CCW adds yet another State. I am also inquiring about another non- res to fill "holes".

Personal, and we don't need to know. We do want you to be safe and responsible tho'.

California CARRY

Dave, don't even think about it in LA County. On the other hand, you can legally carry a five inch folder in California.

The problem is that conviction here of carrying a concealed weapon, even when it's pled down to a misdemeanor, as the northern counties might do, deprives you of the opportunity of getting a legal CCW elsewhere.

The other problem is that if you are arrested anywhere in the Central Valley, or any of the cities, you are going to have a very, very bad experience in jail.

Settle for the folder and some OC, and stay the hell out of LA. If your folks live in a big city, do not do any wandering around. Don't honk your horn, don't stare, don't react.

Hang around your folks house, and have a good time.

I live in MD, a very anti state where it's virtually impossible to get CCW. You've had some pretty good suggestions so far.

I primarily use pepper spray and a folding knife. My knife is only 2.5" so I might upgrade to 3-4" if I can (I don't know the limit here). You may also want to look into the laws on "civilian" (argh, like cops aren't civilians) carry of stun guns and if allowed pick one up too (I'm pretty sure they are illegal for us peons here in MD). Only on very rare occasions would I even think about carrying here. If you will be going into a dangerous situation (i.e. going into a really bad neighborhood especially at night, carrying a ton of cash especially at night, you are under a real and direct personal threat to your safety, etc.) and there is no way out of it then, and only then, it might be worth the risk. In the 2-3 years I've owned guns now I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually carried (and then for the minimum amount of time possible) and I live here.

I grew up in Fresno and have no desire to see the inside of the jail (again)

Great topic. Now that I am on the way to my MO CCW, come on Oct. 11, I am reassessing my travel options. Now I don't travel out of the state much on my own. I do travel several times a year on company business.

My wife and I like to go to a bar in Alton, Ill. Now that I will be carrying, or at least have a weapon in the car that may have to change. Illinois has the "Daily Rash" about protecting yourself and they have said they will prosecute Missouri residents if a weapon is found in their car. I think in the beginning Missouri cars will be "profiled" and pulled over. So it just might be "So long Fast Eddies".

Same in Kansas, my nephew lives there and I will have to see what's up with their hospitality towards Missourians.

My next trip is to California, who knows?

Keep it in a locked container. Once in a while I'll be 'underarmed' but never 'unarmed'. Keep your wits about you and don't look clueless. There's plenty of easier victims to go around.

The law is the law. Stupid laws need to be changed, not disobeyed. (you're not Ghandi or Martin Luther King, Jr.) If a venue disarms you and strips you of your constitutional right, avoid that venue.

I'm fresh home from three days' worth of noodling around Colorado, where I've lived for the past year and a couple months. Unless I've got a clear and compelling business reason to visit a state that doesn't honor my Colorado permit to carry concealed hand guns, I won't go there. I'll spend my dollars in states that respect my civil rights.

Roadrash, if you are coming to California in the Central Valley do not carry. I just came back from the South and kept mine in a locked box. In the motel it was in condition 1. When I traveled it went with me. Not on me, when I stopped it was in the vehicle . Don`t take the chance of loosing your right to own, purchase, carry, shoot, or even be in the company of others that have guns around. Carry a folder, 5" is legal in California( Cold Steel ) $55.00. When here as in any other place watch your six. The kids are the main problem in the large cities, druggies are a problem also. But this is country wide. Go and have a good time visiting your parents. Don`t worry about the crap heads, but be alert to your surroundings. Don`t be paraniod! If you are in a big city stay in well lighted areas. I don`t too much care to be out much after dark.
