Carrying while traveling

Ok, I know here in Texas, if I am traveling I am allowed to carry my weapon in my car for protection, but is this a state law or is it federal? There is a chance I may be driving from Texas to Missouri in July and I realized I don't know if the law is applicable to all states in the union or if it is a state by state basis. I realizw there are other rules along with it, they aren't my concern here. I mainly wanted to find out if a state could say that I can't carry my weapon concealed while traveling.

Travelers Guide

I'd suggest you also get a copy of "Traveler's Guide to the Firearms Laws of the Fifty States". Its in many local gun stores and is invaluable if you travel.
Traveling in Texas without a carry license is an invitation to legal intanglements in a traffic stop. You'd have a lot of explaining to do to avoid going to jail. You should consider getting a license.
Also, when stopped, we're required to show the officer our chl license along with the dl if carrying. It will show up in the plate check anyway and if we don't its a problem (read charge). If stopped without a license, the quandry is to tell and risk a charge, or if searched and found you'd be definitely charged.
I won't go into having to use the unlicensed or licensed firearm to defend one's self...another whole ballgame.
Without "nagging" go to a local gunshop and get the application card for a license. Last I heard, $140 for a 4 year license and usually $100 for the training.

I plan on getting a license, but it may not be in before my trip since the trip is in July and my 21st birthday is in May. Texas allows you to carry concealed as long as you are traveling and only while en route to or from your destination. Considering my address on my Dl is in Houston and I would be registered for an event in Missouri I don't think it would be difficult to prove I was traveling. I will find a copy of that traveler's guide you recommended and see what it says. If all else fails I'll just check the laws of every state I am going to pass through, I was just hoping there was a federal law allowing me to carry while traveling.

It's a state law for concealed carry....

but if you are travelling through a state to another state you can pack your guns unloaded in the locked trunk, and that is federal. But be advised, some states don't honor that and will bust you or take your guns. The Texas CCL web site has a list of states that honor Texas CCL. MO is not one of them....chris3

I consider it absolutely to have a firearm readily available when traveling. I also reside in a California jurisdiction where CCWs are not issued, except to people like Diane Feinstein(!) and Jack Nicholson.

When cruising the interstate, I keep a piece in my briefcase, which resides on the passenfer seat. The case is closed but not latched or locked.

If I am stopped by a LEO, it's an easy matter to reach over and spin the tumblers on the combination lock without being observed through the RV mirror.

If I haven't done anything to cause the LEO to impound my car (DUI, felony), in most jurisdictions he can't go into the briefcase without my permission, probable cause or a warrant. NOTE: It's always a very good idea to be polite and courteous when stopped by a LEO...

I consider having a firearm w/ me when I travel a necessity much like bringing a change of clothes or a toothbrush.
In recent weeks, circumstances have gotten me to rethink applying for my carry permit. I just need to find the time & pick up an app & get through the process.
