I am looking at traveling through the Midwest this fall and was wondering about the different laws I may come across. All the States I am traveling to or through have reciprocity agreements with Texas, however I am concerned about other issues.

For example I have read that it is illegal to carry Hollow Points in New Jersey. Are there any such issues in else where? I will be in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

To clarify I am looking specifically for state laws on Concealed Carry that may be unique to the fore mentioned states. Your help is greatly appreciated....

Also, if another vehicle traveling with us does not have a CCL can they have a handgun in the vehicle (I understand that they can not carry on their person)?

For Colorado law there are some differences.

For example, anyone who can legally own a firearm can carry a loaded handgun in their vehicle, long guns may have loaded magazines but must have empty chambers and open carry is legal state-wide (EXCEPT in Denver) though common sense should prevail. There are other differences from TX law also.

You can get the CO laws and details at :http://www.rmgo.org/

Good Luck and enjoy your trip!

Regards,
:)

Just remember to stay the hell out of Illinois. It's about as gun friendly as the Brady Bunch

Texans consider New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma the midwest? That made me chuckle. Anyway enjoy your trip, and drive safe!

PS- Be careful with the gun in the non-CCL vehicle. I dont have my permit, but when Im driving anywhere with my guns they are unloaded, empty mags, lock box back of truck or in the trunk. Kind of defeats the purpose of bringing it with for protection, I did a little looking into it around my area as far as maybe keeping it in my tackle box, or something like that. I was a little surprise at how wide 'concealed weapon' is defined.

Iowa isn't very friendly towards CCW

Well, we are, and we aren't. Surely not as unfriendly as Illinois.

It comes down to the local sheriff. In my county, if you want a permit, no problem its yours. In others, you are all but guaranteed not to get one.

BTW, Iowa wasn't mentioned in the OP's post. He is looking for info in what I myself might call the southwest. Surely not the midwest though. Sorry for hijacking it this much.

Thank you for your help....I guess since every thing is pretty much north from here we look at things a little different....No offense intended....

These reference sites are great...

Yep. Kansas is definitely a Yankee State.

Sure do have some purty gals there though. I married one. She's now a born again Texan. Loves chicken fried steak and Tex-Mex too.

In AZ you want to have it on your person if there are other people in the car with you. While open carry is legal in the state, vehicles are a fuzzy area. It must be visible to the casual observer looking into your car.

If you put the gun in your center console and have a passenger in the front seat, they may be liable for having a concealed weapon within their sphere of control. If it's on you, no big deal.

Also no carrying in locations that serve liquor. (Selling it is fine, but a license for consumption on the premises is different)

I think that's the extent of our strangeness.
