Ok, i was full length sizing some .308 federal brass i had sitting around and one got stuck in the die. I lubed and had already finished two batches, i was almost done with the third and had no other problems. The case went in O.K. like the others, but when i went to pull it out, the shell holder ripped two chunks off the rim. I tried to twist the shell holder and make it hold onto a different part of the rim, but it just pulled two more chunks off. So i cut and hacked away at the bottom and got my pin out of it. But now i am stuck with a die and most of a case in it. Any ideas on how i can get that out? I am using a lee classic turrett press with lee pace setter dies. Hornady one shot spray lube.

Is the case primed? If not drill the primer pocket and run a screw or bolt into it...pull it out. If it is maybe a dowel down through the neck and hammer it out. some penetrating oil may help.

Stuck case.

There is a tool made just for this. Believe it or not it is call a Stuck case remover. Comes with a drill bit , tap, and bolt, and a coller that fits over the end of the case. You could probably make one. But , Yes you need to drill out the primer hole( NO Primer) Tap it, put the coller on and screw in the bolt .
The case will come out. Unless allready done you may break the decapping pin. Not sure how those dies are made. A series of oversized washers with a smaller one at the end can work also. By oversized , I mean larger then the case but smaller then the die.

Wow that sounds difficult, i already broke the pin so i will just buy a new die. It is only $11.00. But i will try freezing it first. Thanks for the input guys!

My wife pointed out a good point. The case completely failed, the rim ripped off... Is that a sign of weak brass? Should i scrap all of that brass with it?

No, you just didn't have enough lube on the case. That one-shot is crap, get some real lube for your next try.

Brass ok

Ya , what he said. that brass is ok . just not lubed good. Get the better stuff.
That die is fine too. Never thought about freezing. Good idea.

I've never had a problem twisting a stuck case out with channel-locks. A new pin is probably only a buck, why not save ten?

the easiest way to remove a stuck case

I inadvertantly selected an oversized shell holder the other day and pushed a case into the die - it didn't come out needless to say.

I simply screwed the decaping pin die down to push the case back out.

This is with an RCBS die.

I don't know what brand of die you have there but if it has a screw-in decaping pin stem then that works very well and saves a lot of stress.

The friction held pins could be loosened and tapped down with a brass hammer to extract the case too.

I read that you sawed the case head off though....

Decapping pins can be purchased separately.

The brass is fine - as said, you needed a little more lube is all.

With the Lee dies you can simply unscrew the collet that holds the decaping pin and place a drift inside the case and tap it out. It’s going to be much more difficult to remove now that you’ve cut the base off; a new die is likely cheaper than the kit to remove stuck cases. + 1 on the Dillon lube. Also, if you’re shooting a bolt gun, just neck size as it’s much easier; the cases will last longer, and will likely be more accurate.

Yep had the same problem with a 223 case and one shot! The ONLY way one-shot lube works is if you give it 3-4 shots and not just one shot! I had a box of 300-400 .223 cases and had to spray it several times to get a good coating.

I drilled and tapped the bottom of the case to get mine out.

for future reference, don't cut the shell in half. lee dies are meant to have the collet loosened and the pin tapped down to remove the case. I say tap loosely because sometimes it requires more than a few firm smacks. call lee and if you send the die in with 4 bucks they usually will remove it for you and send it back. i buggered one up so bad once i had to do this.

Case removal , drill and tap stuck case with 1/4", place die in press and using 1/4" bolt, washers and spacers screw the brass out of die.

Using One Shot place brass in a large Zip-Loc bag, spray liberally, zip bag, stir, let dry a minute or two. Clean die of old lube and give a shot of One Shot before use.
Using this method One Shot has preformed great for me.

RCBS case lube works great...Lee makes a good water soluable lube too that I hear works very well for only a few bucks.

I've been using the RCBS Case Lube 2, which is water soluble, ever since it was invented.

It's great stuff, and I've never had any problems with stuck cases...

Send it to RCBS...... cost $5 for the return postage. Takes a couple of weeks.
Call them and talk to them, they'll tell ya what ya need to do!

I know RCBS has great customer service, they have helped me in the past. But will they remove the case if its not a RSBS Die? I haven't found where he posted what brand die it is.

Micken: if you have ripped the entire end out of the case its probably best to send the die to the company that made it. If you only ripped off the rim and the flash hole is still intact you can drill/tap the flash hole and use a bolt and washers to remove it. If you dont have the tools your better off to send it in.

I would say the brass you have left is ok you just have a lube problem
