Caution to fellow “brass rats”…

There are no lights out there. There is no power along that road past the trap and skeet club.

Exactly what I was saying. You don't walk into the dark & just hope nothing is going to happen.
It used to be safe to be out after dark around here but lately I have my carry gun with me every time I step out of the house. To walk out into the dark is taking a very large risk & scrounging brass is not worth it. I just wonder if he was really picking up brass or something else. It would be a good place for an out of the way exchange.

Being born in Redlands and raised in Mentone California I've also heard the stories of Lytle Creek.
I guess that place is infamous.

That story just doesn't sound right!

I've pretty often gone to remote areas to pick up brass and just to "get away" for a while. Dead end timber company roads, gravel pits, ect. I go armed and I'm on high alert. (I'm on medium alert most of the time anyway) But not after dark.

When I go to the range I usually go with a buddy. One of us changes targets and the other stays at the firing line. I just don't like having my back to the firing line. Or leaving my gear unguarded. When I go alone I take the bolts out of my rifles or lock them in the truck when I go to change targets and at some ranges I drive the truck to the targets. I also have something with me! Its sad that its come to this but one had better watch his "6" now days.

I feel pretty lucky. Our range is located where there are other LEO facilities, jails, other county facilities just outside a state forest preserve. The place is locked tight before 9AM and after 5PM. It is run very professionally. There is a range officer and three other officers present. Between range ceasefires to change targets we get to police the huge piles of brass in the trough right in front of the firing stations, when the line is not hot. As long as we are reasonable, we can pick up what we need, ours and other shooters brass. Not many reloaders here so I get to keep stocked up. It's a great arraignment. Fees for the year are $100. No one would even think about acting out or doing some crazy stuff and we have people coming from all over the world when they are in town. The only real observation I can make is that most of the people who shoot outside of the regulars are horrible shots and just burn up ammo. It keeps us in brass however, so it's a silver lining.
