As always I'm constantly looking for components. This time I found a thousand CCI small pistol primers No. 500 for $28. The goal is basic range fodder stuff. Problem is, aren't these magnum primers?

I was planning on light 38 special loads using titegroup. Are these too hot for this powder? I'm looking to load ~3.2 gr. with plated 125 gr bullets.

Would I be better off using this primer/ powder combo for something else?

That's my go to primer for all my pistol loads. RC is correct as always! :) For $28 I would buy 5,000! My local shop sells them for $30/1k, or $142.50/5k.

Like said, the CCI500 primers are standard primers. Just a note, magnum primers will burn slightly longer and slightly hotter but they will not create a nuclear explosion. Most powders don't require a magnum primer but if that's all you can get, you use them. All you need to do is make a very small adjustment in the powder charge to achieve the same velocity. In most cases the difference is only .1gr, .2gr at the most.

Not to worry though, you have bought standard primers and very good primers at that. In today's world $28/k is a good price.

Those are indeed standard primers, 550's are magnum.

Glad you found components, things have been really good around here also.

If I could find CCI 500’s for $26, the stores shelf would be empty when I left. I haven’t seen primers for under $36/1000 for over a year.

Saw them (CCI 500) at the last gun show for $30 out the door (tax included). I saw pistol powder for $20/lb. Things are getting better. :D

The day before Christmas, Cabela's in Grand Rapids had lots of CCI 500 primers on the shelf. With the $20 off $100 coupon Cabela's sends out, the price came to $24 per 1000. I stocked up.

That's good stuff guys. Thanks for the help.

I've been getting lucky lately. Picked up a pound of Titegroup the other day for $20. Not my 1st choice but WTH. It will do just fine with those primers.

I like CCI SPP. They seem to be slightly larger giving few if any loose fits when compared to Winchester. I have had no failures with either. Cant say that about Tula, which also seem ever so slightly oversized as well. Go back and grab 5 or 10 K!

I use CCI 500 all the time and have had no problems due to primers. I also use Winchester Small Primers depending on what I can get. I have not had any problems with either brand.

I also use cci 500 for my handgun needs price on shelf here is
28.00 per K at lgs

The CCIs might or might not be hotter than the primer that your manual used to develop their test loads - something to take into account.

Speaking of primers...

What's the general concensous on S&B SPP?
Fit, performance, etc?

CCI 500 are standard,

I use them to load 9mm, 38 Sp, and 357 Mag without any issues.

I normally pay $30 per 1000. $28 is a good deal.

CCI spp

Guy that taught me to handload (back in the mid-late 70's) used CCI primers.
Bought my own press (Dillon 450) late 70's & quickly learned the economy of buying in bulk..;) Still have some magnum pistol primers & rifle primers I purchased back then (all CCI). In the past decade, I experience something I hadn't ever experienced before..I ran out pf primers!:cuss: A Gander Mountain nearby had closed & I'd bought a bunch of Winchester primers on "closeout"sale..now, they were gone:banghead: THe Win had worked as good as the CCI I'd used for years. Now primers (of any brand) were hard to find..
read online about a store about 30 miles away that had Fiocchi brand spp primers in stock. Were in packs of 150 instead of 100..but bought some, & they too worked well. Last purchase made was for Tula brand spp..I was skeptical of quality, but all internet browsing reports read said they worked well. Bought a order & been using them ever since..Can't say I've noticed any difference in any of the primers I've used, though a chrono might see one. I only wish my shooting was so consistent that a switch of primers would change my level of accuracy..

Used lots of CCI SPs no problems.
Picked up some S+Bs the other day for $23/1000.
Hope they work as well as the CCIs.
jUst thought I would give them a try as they were less expensive, otherwise CCI is my go to for SP.

CCI 500 primers are the only primers I use for my .40 & 9mm rounds. You purchased them at a good price. I'm not sure about others but in my area they have been in stock at the local places for a while now.
