I was just wondering what you carried in your CCW. Do you use reloaded ammunition or factory ammunition? I personally have no problem carrying my reloaded ammunition.

I trust my reloads further then I trust factory loads.

In the last 50 years, I have had a few factory duds.
No flash hole in the case for instance.

In the same time period, I have never had a reload of mine fail to do exactly as intended.

There are those who subscribe to the legal issue of using reloads.
My personal feeling is if I have a legal right to shoot a BG, it wouldn't matter much what I use to do it with.

I could as easily pick up a skeet gun out of the gun cabinet and shoot him with a reloaded target load.

No legal problem with that if he was inside my house or coming through the door!

Casey,

I used to feel the same way until I took Judicious Use of Deadly Force with Mr. Ayoob. He articulately and forcefully explained why this is a hideously bad idea. He walked us through the arguments that the DA/Prosecutor will (and has) use against you.

"So, ladies and gentlemen of the jury--this man spent HOURS in his basement concocting the perfect ammunition for killing human beings! I know, it seems strange, but he locked himself away from the world and loaded these 'dum dum' bullets into meticulously prepared ammunition--a quasi religious experience for him--we can only guess what shortcomings drove him to this point...Most bullets explode when they hit something, but when these bullets hit you, YOU explode!! Look at these photos of the victim of this man's wrath and loathing of humanity....<pics>...So, Mr. Casey, and let me remind you that you are under oath--was it a plan to execute this man using your special death recipe, cop killer dum dum ammunition, or was he just unlucky enough to wander into your view while you were having a bad day?"

In short, it's a fight that you don't need in court. One less thing to explain/defend could mean your freedom, and all the money you (we) thought we were saving will end up in your lawyer's bank account.

Carry factory. That's my advice.

I agree with rcmodel with the fact it doesn't make a difference what you shoot a BG with, if he's shot he's shot. The only issue with using reloads is if there is some question as to what actually happened. Let's say the BG rushed you with a knife and you shot him from 3 feet away. The BG's friends say he was 30 feet away. At 3' there would be tattooing (powder residue etc) on the BG's clothes. This could be easily replicated in a forensics lab with factory ammo, just test XY brand catalog #123. It could be replicated with reloads but the question would be if the load tested was actually what you had in the gun. factory ammo wouldn't present that problem.

As far as reliability goes my reloads have passed the discrminating inspector there is...me. I do carry factory loads for the reason I gave.

For the same reasons listed above I use Factory JHPs in my carry gun (Hornady 124gr TAP for the record)

Did he cite any examples?

Prior cases where this has come up?

Factory loads. Depends on what I get. I always carry Hollow Points. Currently:
The Sigma 40VE is loaded with Magtech First Defense
The Keltec P11 is loaded with Federal Hi Shoks
The Rossi is loaded with Hornady Critical Defense? .357 and Magtech First Defense .38spcl.

Hey, thats just me. I do what I want.

95gr FNEBs in my Bersa Thunder .380 (can't remember who made them.), and Winchester 158gr JFNs in my Undercover .38. Both are factory loads.

180 grain Federal Hydrashocks in both my XDM and Kahr CW 40 . I dont reload so it's not really an option in my case .

Speer 45 ACP 230 Grain Gold Dot Hollow Point. if memory serves. Also Lawman Full Metal Jacket as a backup load.

And a self regulated Utility capable of generating much voltage with a very short Transmission System. /sarcasm (Taser C2) One of these days Im gonna hammer it into the house meter and try to move 12Kw and 16Kw surge with it.

An old, modified, Model 36 Snubby - and, 1940s 'Peters' 158grn, Nickel plated Case, 'Police Load', RNL.

If I ever start carrying my S&W Model 13, it'll be a 'peppy-enough-for-me' Elmer Keith tribute, of 148 HBW, loaded backwards, in a .38 S & W Special Case, and going around 1,150 fps.

I recon that'd do...

Most of my carry guns are .45ACPs. Eight months of the year I carry whatever is most reliable and accurate. For the most part that means LRN or LSWC handloads. The argument that they are higher powered than most won't hold up because most of them are target loads.

However, during the summer months I switch to factory HPs or FMJs. I work in Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City, Ariz., frequently. The temperature regularly tops 120. That puts the temp inside a locked vehicle at more than 180 even if you leave the windows cracked open.

A few years ago I left a gun under the seat. When I went to the range the next time every round failed. They were all cast bullets. I took the rounds apart and found that the bullet wax had melted and leaked into the powder.

As to bullets, I don't really care whether they are HPs or FMJs. They are .45s. They make a big hole.

I carry factory simply because I don't reload yet, but I would prefer to carry handloads simply because I would be able to KNOW that they were quality. As a THR'er put it once, I don't have to bet my life on the Federal Ammunition employee who might be recapping his weekend of drinking and chasing women on monday to a fellow employee.

Spend the money you save on Ayoob's Lethal Force classes if you want. Those will look good in court.

Even though I want to be brave and shoot my reloads I buy my carry ammo because I don't want to become a victim a second time in court. I agree it should matter but sadly, it does. On a good note, less than a year ago I was able to find my carry ammo very cheap. "Ammo To Go" had Federal 158gr LSWC/HP .38 Special +P ammo on sale. (the FBI Load) A box of 50 was only $17.95 so I bought 4 boxes. (200 rounds) If I had known how bad things were going to get I would have bought 500 rounds, especially at that price. The Remington FBI Load (R38S12) was $39/50 at the same time. Actually, 200 rounds plus the additional 100 Remington rounds I have is plenty since I have a good replica FBI load I use for practice.

hobgob I carry federal HST's in my 1911.

Where do you get yours if you don't mind my asking, I can't find them on any of the usual websites in-stock.
