Man and boy killed in shootout

UPDATED: Tuesday, August 03, 2004 6:15:55 PM

CLEVELAND –- A man and a boy are both dead Tuesday afternoon, after an attempted robbery goes wrong.

Police say shots were fired around 8:45 a.m. in the area of E.156th and Lakeshore.

A preliminary investigation revealed the owner of United Check Cashing store was opening for business when three suspects approached him.

Gunfire was exchanged when the 14-year-old boy allegedly shot the check-cashing employee in the chest. The employee then reportedly shot the boy in the head.

EMS transported the two victims to Huron Hospital.

The suspect and owner were both pronounced dead Tuesday.

Police say the owner of the store had a conceal and carry weapon permit.

No names have been released at this time.

The two other suspects are still at large.

Too bad the little murderer didn't suffer long enough to rat out his fellow scum.

Darn shame about the CCW holder dying, but at the least he'll have a 14 y/o punk to serve as his Honor slave in the afterlife.

Maybe the rest of the crimminals in Ohio will start to think twice about assaulting citizens, they may be armed and dangerous (to crimminals that is).

I don t know about you,but when I was 14 armed robbery wasn t on my list of things to do on summer vacation. I agree kid got what he deserved to bad about the other guy. He was just trying to make a living.

And the Brady Bunch gets to add another "child killed by gun violence" to their "statistics."

Reno,

Hadn't even thought of that but you're right. That's enough to turn my stomach... :barf:

Every single check cashing place I've been in has had the super thick plexiglass at every single teller window and a remote lock door to the back of the place. Is this place not set up to defend itself against a robbery?

Damn shame about what happened. The goblins do get one of us every now and then.

In Ohio you need CCW for your business premises?

You can train and carry the best equipment on the market, but a CCW permit doesn't make one bulletproof.

You can still lose.

But he took the little SOB with him.

Too bad the CCW holder didnt make it here :(

Anyone have more details? Why did he wait to get shot before he drew? I woulda drew right when someone pulled a gun on me. Something doesnt sound right unless im reading it wrong....

EMS transported the two victims to Huron Hospital.

seems to me they got this part wrong.
should read
EMS transported the victom and the crimial to Huron Hospital

I think in the video they said he was accosted while opening his store, I'm not sure what that means, but it could mean that he was attacked while occupied with unlocking the front door or something.

Don't worry - be some cute pic of him as a "lil boy" there somewhere -gurantee'd...

Sounds like the owner was ambushed while unlocking the store. Possibly he lost his situational awareness while fumbling with the keys.

Too bad that he was killed, but at least he took his murderer with him. "Goats on the left, sheep on the right." (obscure Biblical reference, I am sure that some of you will get it.)

Summation:

1. Multiple attackers
2. Normal daylight hours
3. At least 1 attacker was armed
4. Business (?) section of town - (heavy street and pedestrian traffic?)
5. Victim not wearing protective vest.
6. Victim had weapon in holster instead of in hand when opening door.
7. Young attackers

Anything else I missed?

Update: The perp was 17 and should have been in Jail for an earlier robbery but the charges were dropped when he didn't appear for court.:banghead:

Gunfire erupts; teen assailant, merchant slain

One morning in June, Bill Singleton was opening his Collinwood check-cashing store when he had to fend off a would-be robber in a skeleton mask. Though the man had a gun, Singleton managed to hold the door shut and lock it before calling police.

When robbers came to Singleton's business Tuesday morning - three of them this time - they weren't the only ones with guns.

In an exchange of gunfire, Singleton and a 17-year-old assailant were shot in the parking lot outside the United Check Cashing store on Lake Shore Boulevard near East 156th Street. Both later died at Huron Hospital.

Cleveland police said Singleton was shot once in the chest, and he shot 17-year-old Rhyan Ikner once in the head. The two accomplices that witnesses saw with Ikner have not been found, said police Lt. Wayne Drummond. It was unclear Tuesday whether Singleton was shot by Ikner or one of the other robbers, Drummond said.

Friends described Singleton, 59, of Solon, as a kind man who was active in the neighborhood merchants association, and who sought to help lift up the nascent retail district surrounding his business, which opened last year.

His family could not be reached.

"He treated everybody so decently," said City Councilman Mike Polensek, who was supposed to meet Singleton on Thursday to talk about the neighborhood. "He believed in the neighborhood."

But Singleton also worried that his business would attract thieves. He said he was robbed at least twice, and he was planning to buy surveillance cameras to mount outside the store, said Brian Friedman, head of the Northeast Shores Development Corp.

Records show Singleton received a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

"He was scared," Friedman said. "He had a sneaking suspicion this would happen."

Though new businesses have opened up along Lake Shore Boulevard, crime is still a problem near Singleton's store, Friedman said. On Monday, two workers at York Video, across the street from Singleton's business, were held at gunpoint by a man demanding money.

"It became a war zone in two days," said Eray Beverly, the video store manager, who was hit in the face by the gunman.

Ikner was arrested in March on aggravated robbery charges after police said he held up two men with a handgun.

The victims failed to appear in court for trial, and the charges were dropped on June 17. Ikner was released that day from the Cuyahoga County Jail - three days after the masked robber tried to break into Singleton's store.

Ikner also was found delinquent six times in Juvenile Court since 2001 on charges of drug possession, drug trafficking and assault, court records show.

Ikner's family could not be reached for comment.

How else would he do it? Having my gun in my hand in public would likely get me arrested or shot. At the very least, it's considered brandishing, a big no no.

The store is located in the transitional area of the Cities of Cleveland & Euclid. (I don't know which city, but is ....well not the nicest part of town

Rough area.....a co-worker stopped at a gas/quicky-store one morning a few blocks away, and was greeted with a handgun shoved in his face and "Gimme yur wallet, mo-fo......"
