OK, I'm new here and to CCW. My question is when I take the "qualification" at the range for my CCW permit what gun do I use?

In OK if you qualify with a semiautomatic you can carry either a semiauto or revolver. This isn't my question.

Question is specifically, do I qualify with the gun I plan on carrying (9mm) OR do I use my little .22 Buckmark camper. Is it better, in the event I have to use it one day, to qualify with the caliber I carry or not?

Pros and Cons welcome, along with constructive debate.

Thanks in advance for helping a newcomer!

I'm trying to think why it would matter as the bottom line is you should know how to handle ALL of your firearms but especially the one you carry. However, none of that has anything to do with which one you choose to qualify with.

As a personal preference, I would choose to qualify with my regular carry weapon.

In MI, our "qualification" is 3 hours of time at the firing range and what you shoot has no bearing on what you can carry. That said, the CCW class I took required you to bring your own gun and 50 rds of ammo. I took my CZ-82 because it was the only pistol I had at the time, although I could have borrowed my dad's .22 revolver. I would take the gun I planned on carrying, as it is a class on carrying and it seems more appropriate.

On the advice of my friend teaching the class, I qualified with each pistol there was/is a possibility of carrying. My friend's reasoning was that I needed to have documented proficiency with them. If,heaven forbid I used a weapon I did not qualify on, the persecution could argue that I lacked familiarity with it and my shooting was negligent. It a good way to just cover your backside, Chemist.
And wealcome to THR!

Thanks 702, I could qualify with either. I take firearm safety very seriously.
I'm asking if I ever go to court which would be most beneficial to my defense. (I'm a woman if that means anything to this question too.)

Going to court would be the least of my concerns if/when I need to use a gun. That being said, I doubt any court would care if the guy was shot with a .22 or a .45 as at the end of the day the outcome is the same. Somebody got shot and the same outcome would have happened no matter what gun I was carrying at the time.

Other than a little bit of cost, what would be the advantages of qualifying with the .22? Does the range qual require drawing from a holster? Do you have a holster that works for drawing from for the .22?

Maybe something you haven't considered is that you are going to leave yourself open for a lot of unsolicited advice if you take the .22 to qualify with... I am guessing at least one person there is going to tell you the .22 isn't enough for self defense, even if you don't ask them. So, do you also want to put up with that?

I think you should have a real blast and show up with a .50AE Desert Eagle! :what:

Even though it is not required, I think you should qualify with your carry-gun.
Do this for your own piece of mind. It's likely to increase your confidence with that particular weapon. Being confident in your ability with your carry gun will make you better equipped to use it if you should ever need to.

I wouldn't worry too much about legal hypothetical situations. Reason and sound judgement will serve you much better than trying to prepare for any and every litigious possibility.

Good luck on your qualifier.

qualify with your primary carry.
I qualified with mine, but carry a Kel-Tec every now and then when I wear certain clothes. I'm not as accurate as my primary, but I still get em' within 1" of the bull's eye.
Confidence of competency is your goal.

Chemist,

Tulsa has been referred to as the "Buckle of the Bible Belt" and so I assume that you are getting your license in Oklahoma.

Yes, it does matter what you use. If you use a derringer, you are not permitted to carry a revolver or a semi-auto. If you use a revolver, you can use a derringer but not a semi-auto. If you use a semi-auto (any caliber) you can carry all three.

Call up the place that you will be getting your training from and they will confirm.

In Texas I believe the smallest weapon you can use to qualify for a CHL is a
.32 ACP.
I would use the weapon you plan on carrying to qualify if you have it already. I know where my wife and I took our class and qualification we were able to use rental guns at no extra cost since we had purchased handguns as yet. They even provided ammo as part of the fee for the class

Different states have different requirements, and some instructors have their own preferences/prejudices. My instructor gave me a handout that specifically said to bring a self-defense caliber. We were specifically instructed to NOT bring a .22. I found out that I could have qualified with my Five-seveN, though. Seems that’s what the instructor carries.

I brought my 9mm, I shoot it well and the ammo was cheap.

In AZ after July 29th you pick your gun up, holster it, and walk outside...

You can do that in AZ today. After July 29th you can do it under your shirt. ;)

Not necessarily. The prosecutor will try to portray you as a killer who wanted to shoot someone. If you used a S&W model 29 and said, "Go ahead, make my day." as you pulled the trigger, you make his job easier. On the other hand, if you defend yourself with a .22, no one would believe you were looking for a shootout, because that would be suicide.
Perception is reality.

Only you can decide what's right for you.

I'm sure the police in Oklahoma are required to qualify with what they carry. If you do, too, you won't ever have to defend not doing so.
Juries are made up of the 12 people who know the least about the subject at hand, out of all who are called. I would not assume that no prosecuter anywhere would ever claim that you used a .22 for qualification because your 9mm is just too much for you, and that is why x happened instead of y.

Qual with what you intend to carry and is in accordance with your state law imo...

.22 is not an authorized round to qual with for CCW in some states.

Additionally, if you qualify with a revolver, that's all you can carry. Qualifying with an autoloader allows you to carry both, in Texas.

Qualify with the gun that will permit you to carry whichever one you choose to carry on any given day. Subsequently, spend as much time as you can at the range in order to feel comfortable with your ability to use that weapon.

I'm an OK licensed instructor.......qualify with whichever one you want......the caliber of the handgun you qualify with is not included on the application sent to OSBI. Most of my students qualify with a 22 semi auto.
