Hey everyone. I am in the market for a M1 carbine and have been looking at CMP. I have some questions. I read there website on who is eligible and could not make heads or tails of it. I am a former Marine, American Legion member, and a disabled vet. My question is do i qualify to purchase from them? Do i have to complete a qualification range? Lastly if I do have to complete a qualification range Where in Western Maryland or vacinity can i go to get qualified? Thanks in advance.

All you need is your honorable discharge, birth certificate, order form, and be able to pass the NICS background check. Oh, and you'll need to join a CMP affiliated organization such as a local affiliated range or club. You can find one in your area here: http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearch.cgi

Its usually $20-30 for dues.

My feeling is that there should be a sizable CMP discount for vets like yourself.

I would think you are good to go. The national VFW is acceptable to them. I also think you should call them to verify.

devil dog,

You already have what it takes to qualify with CMP:

1. Proof of citizenship and age: Your birth certificate or passport does both. If naturalized the US passport or citizenship certificate.

2. Proof of firearms training- Copy of DD214.

(if you are an officer the DD214 will suffice for 1 and 2 as you have to be a US citizen to be an officer)

3. Club affliation- Copy of you American Legion membership card.

Plus the notarized affidavilt that you download from the CMP website.

That will qualify you for everything but are M1 carbines "assault weapons" in MD? I'm not familiar with current MD law but it seems that you have to submit an application the same as a handgun and requires a 7 day waiting period.

You need to call CMP customer service to see how they handle this.

Would a concealed carry permit count as proof of firearms training?

My understanding is it will as long as there was some type of mandatory training requirement to get it.

yes the M1 carbine would be classified as a assault weapon in Maryland. The restrictions for assault weapons are you must be 21, and either prior military, Law Enforcment, or watch a 15 minute video. Then wait the 7 day cool down phase.
