I was considering getting my concealed carry permit, however a friend tried to persuade me otherwise saying that i could not carry in most places anyway in the surrounding kc area and lawrence. he also mentioned that after I am a registered ccw carrier that i would be flagged and more likely to get messed with by the police(which i dont really believe). anway, any body in the kc or lawrence area have any input here>? anyone know the specifics on legality, ive been trying to contact the class instructor yet i always miss her calls. I just wanna get some more backround info before i spend all the money for the permit.

Go ahead and get your license. There are some places where carrying is prohibited, but you can carry about 90% of the time. And, from all reports I've seen, very few cops will harass over CCW, and I've talked to a lot of them. I think Missouri has a concealed carry forum but I haven't been able to find it lately. On the Kansas side, you can go to: http://www.ksccw.com for a lot of additional information.

I'm on the MO side of KC, but (since the KS law change) have carried into KS a great many times. The KS AG has all the rules and regs (http://www.ksag.org/content/page/id/90)

KS isn't much more limited in where you can carry than most other states are. The license is good on the MO side of the state line, as well. It's well worth the effort to be legal, and safe!

By all means, get your class done and send in your app. The recent changes to the law with regard to the posting of signage and other issues related to CCH have made it a lot easier to carry. Lawrence is the land of fruits and nuts, but the bottom line is if the building isn't posted and isn't one of the statutorily prohibited places you can carry there. Lawrence has some silly local ordinances that got rendered moot. I don't go there when not working very often, but I carry nearly everywhere. Remember that parking lots and parks/greenspaces can no longer be posted no matter who owns them. You can always lock it in your car. Get a gunvault. Best of luck.

That brings up a point. Could someone give some clarity to the new rules regarding concealed carry in Church in both Kansas and Missouri? As i understand it, in both States, if the Church isn't posted, you can carry, unless someone in authority, like a Rector, specifically asks you not to and requests that you leave. Then it becomes a low class misdemeanor if you refuse.

If that's the case, that's no different than carrying in some one's private residence. It's okay until they ask you not to, unless they have posted their house.

Clarification?

Bob, you are correct for Missouri, except that even if they post, it's STILL not a crime until you are asked to leave AND YOU REFUSE. I don't know the specifics of Kansas law yet.

The only real no-no in Missouri is a) Buses and b) federal issues like the secure area of airports (duh).

If the police mess with you for legally carrying a gun, it's called discrimination and you can take them to court for it. Or, you could just tell THR about it and every thread member since 2002 will probably call the local sheriff and get Officer Friendly fired...

Bob,

House Bill 2528 changed a lot of things when it became law. With regards to churches, the law still lists them as a prohibited place. HOWEVER, it also says (HB2528) that in order for you to be prosecuted under the concealed carry statutes the building must be posted. The AG's website has a clarifying statement about it here. This may in fact mean that church carry is now defacto legal if the building is not posted. I am a Kansas CCH instructor, but IANAL. You should seek appropriate counsel before you endeavor to test such things. It is possible that a notoriously anti-gun DA, such as the one in Douglas county (lawrence), could at least make you uncomfortable. "You may beat the rap, but you won't beat the ride" so to speak. Just be careful with that one, and do seek appropriate counsel before hand.

Insidious,

Thanks for the info. Given what happened in Nevada, Missouri a few years back, it gives a whole new perception to going to Church.
