I am learning first hand about an unintended consequence of Missouri's new CCW law.

It will cause fewer people to get CCW permits.

Here's how.

The CCW law in Missouri allows anyone who is at least 21 and is not a criminal to legally carry a handgun concealed in their vehicle with no license or permit required.

I teach CCW in Arkansas, where even concealed carry in your vehicle legally requires a CCW permit.

Most folks who get CCW licenses in Arkansas are interested primarily in car carry.

Not that many folks want to go to the trouble of getting all the gear to actually carry a gun on their bodies most of the time. Some do, but not near as many as want to just car carry.

People in Missouri don't have to get a CCW permit to car carry now.

And I've spent a chunk of change trying to get a class going in McDonald County, Missouri without any results.

I had a whole chapter of the American Legion turn me down, citing exactly that reason......They see no point in paying for a CCW permit when they don't need one to carry a concealed gun in their vehicles.

Any MO residents come to the same conclusion yet?

On the one hand I'm a little disappointed as MO won't provide me with a new student pool. Not as much money coming into my gun and accessories fund as I had hoped.

On the other hand, I'm rather jealous of MO as it is now more free than Arkansas. I wish I could carry concealed in my vehicle with no permit and do so legally.

I would even willingly give up my part time business of being a CCW instructor if I could be able to carry with no permit required.

Similar situation here in Virginia. But I think you're not stressing one important aspect of CCW qual training: starting the thought process on shoot/no shoot.

Frankly, that's the most significant benefit I can think of for the vast majority of people new to CCW. With a modicum of indoctrination into safety and a bit of range instruction almost anyone can learn the shooting skills enough to defend themselves. But learning the more philosophical aspects of self-defense (including CCW) can be a long education process.

maybe

i have a Pa lisc and havent decided yet if i will go for a Fl lisc since i can carry in my car legally..my county isnt issuing so i cant get one there

Sorta

My situation is probably typical for many. I can't carry at work. I live in a rural area and don't go to many places where a CCW is more likely needed. (I avoid KC like the plague) When we do go to KC shopping we usually end up on the KS side where Missouri boys with guns are not particularly welcome. Lansing is a nice place to visit but.............
Car carry solves the biggest concern I always had, which was the middle of the night on the road somewhere.

I will get my CCW but there is no panic about it. I prefer the rifle behind the seat anyway. :D

I never thought of it in that light, but it does make some sense... sorta. My BIL is an attorney in and around Springfield way and he's not really pro or con CCW but he did state that IF USED it sure does make sense to show the court (both criminal and civil) that you've undergone training, know the law and the ethics behind use of deadly force, etc.

The two classes I took here in LV were structured such that the courses were videotaped and lotsa handouts were given out, to be placed in a 3 ring notebook with certificate, such that it ALL could be submitted as evidence of training, blah blah. But then again, the instructor had gone through all of Mas Ayoob's LFI courses and was preparing everyone for the aftermath of a self defense situation.

And we all know that nothing bad ever happens going to and from your car into places, now don't we, or that no one ever breaks into your car to steal things... right?

sigh

My situation is about the same as longrifleman. I live in a small town in Missouri and rarely go to KC or St Louis so getting the CCW is not a pressing need. I will eventually get but as about the most dangerous thing I'm going to encounter is maybe a rattlesnake I didn't feel the need to jump on it right away. The wife wants a freezer and the car needs fixin. I still got one in the car though.
