CCW question

New Mexico will soon allow its citizens to carry concealed with a permit. I was trying to find out where you are not allowed to carry from the state's website. All they have listed is schools & liquor establishments. What about work? For those of you that have ccw permits in other states, do you-can you carry to work? Can your employer legally restrict you from carrying?

I personally cannot carry at work. Not a Security forces individual.

An establishment can restrict you from carrying if the laws permit private property owners to do so. That includes any business as well.

Dont know if all the laws are carved in stone yet in New Mexico.

Does NM require you to obtain some type of CCW training prior to applying for a license? If so you should learn all the laws pertaining to carrying in that class. But, I recommend you get a complete copy of the CCW laws for NM and read everything.

Apparantly there is a law allowing private property to post signs in New Mexico. This was taken at a Wal Mart of all places in NM

Not uncommon though. Most states if not all allow private property and business owners to post against guns.

Texas has the infamous 30-06 signs.

When you and your friends run into a sign like that, make sure the management knows you`ll be spending your dollars elsewhere. Sometimes it`s a knee jerk reaction and not thought through. If enough people let them know, they may remove the signs. Letting them know that you are a responsible gun owner could go a long way towards getting those signs thrown in the trash.

An employer can restrict you on their property just like a homeowner can.

I agree with dino.
Disarm, walk inside and ask to speak with the manager (get the highest rank you can, anyway). Inform them that because of their prohibition, you will take your cash elsewhere.

I remember reading a post somewhere about how Applebee's in TX prohibited carrying onto the premises. Well, the word spread really fast via the net, letters were written letting the company know the people will eat elsewhere from now on, etc., etc. Soon after, the company revoked its policy.

YOU MAY WANT TO CHEC WITH WAL MART STORE MANAGER AS THEIR CORPORATE POLICY IS TO NOT PROHIBIT CCW. That saidâ„¢, I have to admit I've never seen such a sign in Colorado. I've had to restrict my efforts to sending E-mail messages to national companies that don't want my business.

The sign is correct, carry in Wal-mart is a felony in NM. No need to get mad at Wal-Mart. In fact, you could say they're doing people a favor by reminding them.

New Mexico has always disallowed open carry in places that served or sold alcohol. NM's new CCW law didn't update the list of prohibited places to remove establishments with liquor licenses from the list. So therefore, most restaurants, and grocery stores (IE, Walmart), would be off-limits.

I can understand the thought process behind banning carry in places that serve alcohol, even though I disagree with it. But banning carry in a place that merely sells it, and doesn't serve it makes no sense at all, other than banning it for the sake of banning it. But then, whoever said laws have to be logical....

Aha! Wally World doesn`t sell alcohol here. In this case, the sign is valid. Oh well. We don`t have a prohibition from carrying in licensed premises here anyway.

As far as I know there's no written policy.

I'm not going to push it, though. I like my job way too much to be the test case.

We have a policy where I work that states:
"VI. FIREARMS
No firearms will be allowed on the premises. If an employee brings a firearm on the premises, this could be cause for immediate termination of employment."
We're trying to get the wording changed to allow CCW holders to carry but I doubt that will ever happen.
We don't have a sign posted on the door so I'm sure that if your not an employee you can carry legally.

Here in Tejas We have signs in front of Liquor Stores that state "any unlawful carring of a firearm is prohibited", Well my question is this Im lawfully carrying a firearm (CHL) ...am I excluded if they don't have the 30-06 posted ???

If the store doesn't make 51% of it's revenue from on-site consumption and they aren't posted with a 30.06 sign then you can carry. The sign means exactly what it says. If you have a CHL you are carrying lawfully.

I'll second that. Even the banks that I have been into have not posted any No Firearms signs - at least in the area of CO that I hang out in.

....and, I agree with the other posters - I can easily spend my money elsewhere.
