I was wondering how those of you who have CCW deal with this matter, traveling in your car while on vacation or for work, and having to cross state lines with different laws on CCW.

I was thinking about the possibility, once I get a CCW, of taking my family on vacation and having to cross into another State which doesn't recognize my State's CCW laws. If I go to the trouble to get a CCW, it is because I want to protect myself and my family. Maybe while on vacation I will have to drive through one of those States. What then? Do I give up my CCW protection?

Do I obey a bad law and not CCW, or do I leave a gun in plain view in the car, not in the glove compartment, not under the front seat, etc?

Or do I CCW anyway?

Go to Packing.org for details on CCW laws in the various states that allow such. It also will include reciprocity laws, wherein one state recognizes the CCW regulations of another.

Unfortunately, there is NOT universal reciprocity. Worse yet, as you probably know, there are still a number of states that have NO CCW whatsoever.

Carrying in those states, of course, is a crime. How you choose to deal with that fact is a personal matter for which only you can decide.

It's tough to recommend breaking laws. I think I would have to go on record saying, read the laws of the state you are entering and follow them. I would hate to land you in jail on your vacation.

I will say this, my gun would be in my hotel room with me or wherever my family and I happend to lodge.

New Jersey is notorious for this. Carrying without a permit is a serious Felony here, and one of the state's favorite things to do is nail people from Pennsylvania, Delaware, and even New York state who come into the state not knowing that their carry permit isn't good here. Their gun gets taken away and they get time in prison, and their RKBA is gone forever because of the Felony.

When Six Flags Great Adventure opened in NJ, people came to it from these states as well as from inside NJ. After they installed metal detectors, it was found that people were coming in with their carry weapons for which they had permits--in their home states. These people were arrested, jailed, and charged (and continue to be).

The deal that really gets my :cuss: is going to PA. For two exits and twenty-some miles, I have to do something with the handgun.

Don't risk traveling through Chicago either. You will get charged with a felony! No more guns for you. Period. Not worth the risk. Avoid these areas or go unarmed if you want to keep youself felony free.
