A 44-40? Haven't you heard? There's no possible way you could hunt with a 44-40. All those old obsolete calibers would never work on deer or elk these days. Way too weak. You need AT LEAST a .308 to try downing anything on 4 legs.

Oh, and congrats on the nice kill.

Are you a thrill seeker? Do you realize that bullet from your .44-40 could have richoceted off the deer and hit you in the noggin? Only calibers with two or three adjectives in their names are adequate for deer.

I love these nonmagnum success stories, thanks!

Trivia:

By about 1940 the .44-40 had killed more deer than any other caliber. It had also killed more humans, both good and bad. Winchester used to have a high velocity load for the model 92 rifle. The box had a warning not to use the ammo in the Winchester 73. Folks never read warnings on cartridge boxes and they blew up their Winchester 73 guns: As a result Winchester stopped making the high velocity ammo.

i own four Winchester 73 and 92 rifles in .44-40. In 1999 i used one of my Winchester model 92 guns to deer hunt in WV. Killed two nice does with two shots using my handloads.

i kinda like 44-40,s. here are my four,a remington 14-1/2 rifle,a marlin 94 cowboy rifle,a winchester 53 carbine and my cd little sharps. the remington 14 1/5 is the only one a little fussy about what you feed it. eastbank.

Fantastic story man, live long and enjoy. There should be more like you!

I like that!!!

Seems your wife is a very wise lady. She has observed your virtues, is satisfied that you were successful in meeting your obligations and is accommodating your desires. What more could you ask for. I am blessed to be married to such a lady myself.
