Got mine from CDNN a few years back when these ex-L.E. Smiths were just starting to trickle in ...
S&W 4566.
Executive summary for those interested:
This one was a typical cop gun - that is, it was carried a lot and shot very little, except at the annual qual-ritual.
Internally, however, it was
very dirty. The muzzle-end of the slide showed noticable holster wear. But the gun also arrived with the factory upgrades to the later 45XX-series models, like the black hammer and trigger.
Surprisingly, the fixed Novak Trijicons had been refurbished with new inserts (not sure by whom, but don't think it was CDNN). You could quickly pick up the sight-pic in low-light. In a "no-light" environ they were extremely bright.
I cleaned it up and function-fired it for about 300-rds. I noticed that the ramp appeared well-polished, another benefit of it being a cop-gun, I assumed.
My sample shot perfectly to point-of-aim without sight adjustment using some 230gn ball ammo I had. Decent groups too. It then shot nice tight groups with Remington's 230gn Golden Sabers. There were no hicupps at all using any of six different 45XX-series mags I've come into over the years.
Not having anything that might even remotely be called a "pimp gun," I figured "What the hell?"
So I shipped it off to Virgil Tripp @ Tripp Research for hard-chroming, along with the mag that came with it. Virgil did his usual excellent work.
The gun returned looking "brand new out of the box."
As I've said before, amid all the "fantastic plastics," S&W's 3rd Generation
10XX- and
45XX-series pistols continue to be vastly underrated in the U.S. shooting community.
Don't pass one up if you get the chance.
