Im trying to choose a scope for my .17 hmr but im not sure what type to get. Im thinking 3-9x40 would be a good compromise for hunting and informal target shooting out to 100 yards.

Ive been looking at mostly centerfire scopes. But I notice that the parallax on centerfire scopes is usually set at 100 yards.

Would this give me problems if I wanted to occasionally shoot at a distance of 25-50 yards? 100 yards is the max distance I can shoot at my range.

Should I get a scope with 50 yard parallax instead?

I went with the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20X50mm AO on my CZ452 Varmint. I got the scope from www.riflescopes.com. It was a little over $100. It is very clear, relatively inexpensive, looks great, and give excellent magnification. Highly recommended.

Leupold designed the AO scopes to be used on any firearm, rimfire, centerfire, even airguns.

i use a centerpoint 4-16x 40.coat $69 at walmart.you need a good power scope for the tiny littel holes when shooting paper/slater tagets

Three of my 17's are wearing Zeiss 6.5x20's. They work great for little targets. Great quality glass, target turrets for easy windage and elevation changes, side parallax that's adjustable form 50yds to infinity,

There are some pretty decent scopes with adjustable objectives that are reasonably priced. A lot of folks over at Rimfire Central like the Mueller APV, a 4.5-14X40 AO that sells for about $130. They probably aren't as rugged as a more expensive scope, but a rimfire rifle doesn't get hauled up into the mountains for the trip of a lifetime.

I put a ProStaff Nikon 3-9 on my CZ .17 HRR. I use it for Prairie Dogs out to 150 yards and it work great. (Over 150 I go to my DPMS Bull 20 in .223)

As long as your centerfire scope has an AO on it, this should not be a concern. I use 6x24's on my 17's, so I can see the holes at 100 yds on paper, with the ao , I can crank it down to 6x, and hunt all I want with it.
