I saw a Century arms assembled m1 garand at my local shop for about 500$ Provided its in good condition should I go pick it up when I get my tax refund?

NO.
Go to the CMP and get a Garand. Send it to Deans Gun Restorations and have a real USGI Garand like new for around a grand. Or look up The Garand Guy and buy one from him in good condition.
Century Arms has cast receivers, and I did see where somebody got one way out of spec and had to replace the receiver with a USGI receiver.

i have a Century Garand that ive had a few problems with, but they werent anything major. the main problem ive had is every now n then it will fail to eject. the bolt wont even budge. go a couple rounds and then it does that and it feels like shootin a bolt action. havent had failure while hunting though. its not all that bad. ive thought bout switchin out the Century receiver for a GI one. but i think im just going to buy a GI Garand and keep the Century as is. its plenty accurate to 100 yrds (havent shot ne farther then that with it) for deer. bought it off a friend before i really knew squat about Garands. maybe Century, but im still keepin it. ill pick up a GI Garand sometime before the year is out.

No. Friends don't let friends buy Century Garands. The receivers are out of spec. Stick with USGI through the CMP.

As mentioned at the top of this web page, presented without comment.

An invoice showing a tech inspection on a Century "brand new" ordered by Walk Kuleck at Fulton Armory.
This was in 2000 FYI so who knows, but it is enough for me.

There is a whole web page on Century there but can't link directly to it.
There are close up pics of the specific rifle in question.

fulton-armory.com, Garand section, FAQ. Now to be fair, Fulton and Century are competitors but Kulek is generally very fair in his evaluation of things, and has written a few books on the subject.

Maybe I just got lucky, I picked a Centruy up a couple of years ago for $150 to use for parts if I ever needed any for my CMP. I figured I just as well see if it shot, to make a long story short, it functions and shoots as well as my "real M1". The last year or so, I've shot it more, just to keep from wearing out my CMP Garand.

Just my 2 cents.

That's a little more than twice as much as what they are worth. They are usually considered to be worth the cost of parts sans receiver. I wouldn't touch one, or any other semi-auto put together by century with a 10' pole.

I'm against a Century M1 too. If it don't funtion and shoot accurately, all you bought was an overpriced parts kit. For a Garand, I won't trust anything but a ex-.gov rifle. I do have a Nat'l Ord. commercial build, but that's the '03A3... they built commercial Garands too, but I haven't heard enough good about any commercial Garand to take a chance on one.

I don't know if would consider DGR or Fulton M1s to be commercial....

Springfield Armory (inc) put together good M1s, but they have no appeal to me and are too expensive.

Nope, I wouldn't either. They work with USGI receivers and parts. When they're done, my understanding is you have rifle built to spec.

I don't doubt there have been some good M1's built by Springfield Armory Inc, but I've heard too much negative about them too.

I was in Anniston a couple of weekends ago. They still had some Field Grade Danish returns. Lots of Rack Grade Greeks and a very few IH Rack Grades.
Two of the field grade Danes followed me home.

Sarge: Good, I really want to get a field grade. Ill be buying a Garand this summer so hopefully they hold out!

I had a CAI Garand for a while; my only problem was that the front sight was canted just a bit. Not enough to affect accuracy, but enough to just be noticeable if you looked at it just right.

That said, if you have $500, why are you looking at CAI rifles? Get a CMP Garand, dude.

Century is notorious for assembling rifles out of parts bins with zero QC. No ensuring the headspace is ok(it's not even checked), working parts, etc.

SA Inc does the same thing with their new Garands except they usually do check headspace. You do sometimes wind up with some worn out parts.
