I've been looking at Century Arms AMD-65 and their Yugo Underfolder AKs. Apparently they are built on DSI receivers, which are supposed to be good (or so I've been told). Anybody have experience or knowledge of either of these Century AK variants? If I don't buy an AR, I'll probably get one of these two AKs, rather than a WASR-10.

Whenever Century is mentioned, there are two words which tag 'long for the ride - caveat emptor

Century's gunsmith earned thier nickname of drunken monkeys. Recently, they discoveredthat they suck, so for thier galilrifles, assembly has been subcontracted. Anything else they build is usually in need of reconstruction before it's even fired.

I didn't know they did ARs and wouldn't buy one of those from them anyway. I wanted to know about the AKs. The two I mentioned feel like they're built better than the typical Wasrs they put out. Thanks for the info, Thin Black Line.

AndyC, I don't know what you're talking about, seeing as how it's not english. I suppose that's another way of saying the Century products stink.

I had hoped that new U.S. made barrels and U.S. receivers meant a better product. But I didn't come away with much more info than I had when I started this thread...

The Yugo M-70 is also a Century product, but in name only. They assemble the rifles on a DCI receiver that is the heavier 1.6mm and uses RPK heavy trunions. The new rifles are built with Green Mountain barrels. They are built very heavy duty because the Yugo's had a grenade launcher fetish which is hard on a weapon. Mine is a great shooter. DCI is Dan Coonan industries. They don't make junk. http://www.dancoonan.com/
Get them while you can.

century has a reputation for just throwing the rifles together. and not putting much care into the final product. obviously this may or may not be an earned reputation as im sure you will find rifles from superb to subpar (even by combloc standards)

century does 2 things

import whole rifles ( milsurps) wich they dont touch mechanicaly, they just put the god aweful (read: FUGLY) Importer name and seriel number as required by law

import parts kits ( mostly AK type rifles, sans recievers) and build them using a few US made parts and a US made reciever as per 922 requirements. these are the items to be wary of. as centurys job is to make and sell as many rifles as possible, with the highest profit yield possible. like any business. this MAY lead to slopy workmanship

I have one of their Yugo underfolders and love it. It is one stout AK. My friend has a WASR with all the typical issues (canted sight, etc.) and while it feels like trash compared to my Yugo it is still fun to shoot. I'd definitely recommend the Yugo while they're still available. Fit and finish is still a little sloppy, but it's an AK47, they aren't supposed to be finished like an AR15, right..? :D

I got one of the Century Yugo UF's and am very happy with it. Fit and finish was very nice, especially compared to Century's past endearvors. Only knock on this gun is it is very heavy for an AK, with the DCI reciever which is considerably thicker than regular recievers and the grenade sight adds quite a bit of weight. Also while the barrels are brand new not surplus they are not chromelined, probably no big deal but some prefer. Century's cheap Romanian WASR's arent' gonna win any beauty contests but they usually work very well and they are chrome lined. FWIW I bought one of their FAL's a little over a year ago, only 200rds through it but it has been very reliable and is surprising in it's accuracy, nearly as good as my AR.

yes and canted gas rods, bad headspacing and barrels that are not timed correctly. I hear things are getting better these days , but really check out your intended purchase before you buy.

Things are better at Century

I'm on my second Century built rifle. I had an FAL they built that was great, but my short arms and the FAL's long reciever didn't mix well. Other than the gun fitting me poorly it was great; well assembled and well fitted.

I just picked up a Century G3 last week to get another .308 Semi-auto. What sold me was how close the Century was to the owner's personal HK-91 in terms of build & fitment. The welds weren't quite HK but were nice & clean. The rear sight was square to the frame & level as well. It wears a rather generic black coating finish, and while it's not as nice as what the real HK has, it is well applied. Above all the rifle shoots very well.

A friend also has a Yugo underfolder AK from Century that's built as well as any AK this side of a Saiga or VEPR.

Okay, y'all are killin' me with the references to Century's "assembly line" people:D . I get it, I get it. And, I think I'll have to go with the Yugo Underfolder. Once they're gone, they're probably good and gone. Then I'll be paying AR price for a Vepr or Arsenal...if those clowns will actually sell one that is. So off to AK land it is, and all the 7.62x39 I can afford. I hope that stuff doesn't dry up anytime soon. I know 5.56 won't, but I just don't like that round as much.
