I'm looking to buy either a CETME or a G3 sporter, and I'm trying to decide between the two. Wood furniture is not a problem, and neither is polymer. Can the CETME take G3 mags? can the G3 take CETME mags? How do the two compare, performance-wise? What are the average prices and availabilities of the two? Help would be appreciated. Gracias and Danke.

edit: I suppose I should clarify. By "sporter" I mean "semi-auto," and if possible, "able to take a scope."

The Cetme can take the G3 mags but not always the other way. A actual HK will give you a MUCH better quality reciever and total rifle production/assembly quality than a CAI Cetme or their G3 clone.

Er, all the CETMEs I've seen seem to have HK-spec magwells. My 91 takes my neighbor's CETME mags just fine. :uhoh:

True, but you get to the point of diminishing returns long before you reach the $2000-plus price point of a genuine HK91. THe CETME will set you back less than $400, and the quality of the recent CAI CETMEs seems to have improved greatly. For four bills, they are most definitely "plenty good enough".

The mag wells on the CETMEs will accept G3 mags just fine, and I've heard that they tend to function better with G3 mags than with the original CETME mags, some of which seem to cause issues occasionally.

Scope mounting can be done on both CETME and HK91 via claw mount, available at Tapco for $90-ish. They also sell a STANAG-to-Weaver adapter that lets you mount Weaver-base optics onto the STANAG claw mount.

Magazines are dirt cheap, as well...I just ordered another ten German surplus G3 mags from Tapco for $25 total.

Here's what a recent CETME looks like:

where can i find one for this price???

I got mine at the Knoxville gun show from an outfit called Frontier Arms out of Kingston, TN. The price was $379, and they were very knowledgeable about their product.

I took the CETME out for a test spin today, and it worked like a champ. The rifle ate a few mags of nasty CAVIM Venezuelan surplus ammo without a hitch, and with amazingly low recoil. I give it two big thumbs up...a genuine battle rifle for under four bills, and it works.

Wow...those pics are pretty sharp. The one CETME I examined about six-eight months ago was in poor shape, but I see that Century has really cleaned 'em up...

Who knows? Give Century a few more years and they might actually become a really respected gun maker.

Maybe.

The wife thought that it was a great deal and decided that it would be a nice gift for her,my dad and are daughter!
You cannot complain with her shopping skill's!
She told are daughter that her daddy bought her a M1 carbine when she turned 15 for hunting(South Carolina) and that a 308 would be better for the north-woods!

She normally uses a Ruger #1 7X57 for game and shoot's a DPMS sweet-16
for varmint's(herself, her older brother{2/64 3rd ID 19K} and her mom all shoot sweet-16's)

i was checking out Century Arms Website.

What is the difference between the CETME and the G3 Sportser???

That trunion weld looks terrible. The whole oval should be welded, with no voids.

The receiver also looks dented at the lower-front of the ejection port. Is that so, or is it just the image?

The trunion gap is present with all the CAI CETMEs. The trunion is the section where the parts kit barrel is mated to the new receiver, and apparently it's not that easy to get a closed weld there. It doesn't look pretty, but it doesn't impede function in any way. At least the new CETMEs have a fairly small gap...earlier runs had a gap wide enough to toss a No.2 pencil through.

There's no detectable dent in the receiver at the front of the ejection port, so it must be the image. Maybe it looks that way because the trunion gap is right underneath it.
