What do you guys think of CETME's? my brother's thinkin about gettin one....

How accurate are they? What capacity mags are available for em? What price should he expect to pay for it here in the Northwest?

CAI has a reputation of being drunken monkeys smashing things with a wrench. To a great extent... they deserve it. They put out some nasty rifles. But if you take the time to select a good one it's well worth the money. You are taking a risk though. I suggest you visit http://www.cetmerifles.com/forum/index.php . An excellent resource. Be sure to read the primers, especially about parts count. A word of warning: if you don't use surplus .308/7.62 NATO then have one of these handy.

Accuracy: excellent, when properly built(You'll hear this a lot. :D). Mine drives tacks, though I don't. 1 MOA isn't out of the question by any means.

Mags: 20 rounders for the most part. I dislike the steel CETME magazines, they are rather heavy and clunky. And in my rifle they are very loose. They are durable. G3 aluminum mags are dirt cheap, light, and very durable. There are some 30 rounders but, from what I hear, the springs suck and the steel isn't of the best quality. I would avoid.

Price: a good price for a "Black Widow" CETME, with an el cheapo plastic stock, is $350-400. Wood runs a little more, if I remember correctly. I snagged mine for $389, including fees and taxes. A G3 clone will run $500 or so. The G3 clone has a better rear sight(the front sight of the CETME is better, I think), "normal" fire controls(down fire, up safe), and parts are more available. The plastic on the "Black Widow" sucks something awful, in my opinion. I'd throw a set of G3 furniture on. I have meaty hands, so a wide forearm would be great too. Watch your parts count though.

Just hunt through those local shops and find a CETME on the shelves. Check it out thoroughly too and inspect it for any signs of drunken monkey assembly. Then just tell your shop owner that you'll buy it and keep it provided it functions right ;) . In all honesty it's a great rifle and you get a lot of bang for your buck. I see them starting to weasle their way down to the $300 range. I paid appx $400 for mine with wood furniture. If plastic is your cup of tea, go with it, if not, you can always buy a set of wood furniture. The 20 round mags are all over the place and the nice thing is that the CETME will accept G3 mags too! And we all know how friggin cheap those are right now. Tell your "brother" that he better grab this rifle before the anti's do! :)

If properly assembled, it's decent for around $300-400.

The 100 yard sight is kind of crappy V, the 200m aperature works well, I just used the 200 and aimed a bit high.

The 20 round mag works well, although the mag release is awkward and the safety is a little weird. Groups from the bench at 100m were about 2-3" with care. It's a battle rifle, not a sniper rifle. It'll hit a guy at 200m easily all day, but tiny groups? Depends on the rifle.

Personally I'd save a little more and get the G3 clone. the mag release is better as is the sight and safety, and the rifles are nearly twins in operation (the first G3s were modified CETMEs... both designed by Germans, one built in Spain, the other in Germany in the 50s).

I got lucky mine works great. Everytime I pull the trigger it goes bang. Fun to shoot to boot. Only complaints I have are my sights are not zeroed (easy fix) and one of my magazines wont feed. If he can get a dealer to back it go for it.
