I was on eBay of all places and saw a listing for 12 gauge to 45 ACP chamber adapters for a break action shotgun ... I realize these could make the cartridge fire , but will not come in contact with the barrel and will thus be much less accurate and weaker . My question is , are these safe ?! And if so , what possible applications do you see for them ?

Kinda depends on the legnth of the adaptor and wheather it is rifled or not. If it was 6'' long and rifled it would be at least equal to a .45 caliber pistol. I think the biggest issue would be sighting. The other problem is having it fit tightly enough in the chamber so it doesnt droop.
Just my two cents.

Sounds pretty worthless to me as well. I recently watched a video of one in .22 LR seemed to work pretty well at short ranges. How many takes it took to hit the target we will never know. It also requires that you poke the spent casing out with a rod.
No thanks.

I love adapters, use them all the time, just never had one that went in a shotgun......Yet.

Their usefulness depends largely on the intended use. If you are expecting exceptional accuracy with a pistol caliber shotgun shell sized insert out of a shotgun barrel,..it isn't there,..nor was it ever intended to be,..though with the longer barrel inserts it could be.
The shorter inserts used in shotguns are able to be used for taking very close shots at small game,...maybe,...but more importantly, the are meant to be used to "dispatch" larger game with the ammo from a smaller caliber handgun.

The longer rifle and even pistol caliber inserts in break down shotguns are in fact capable of fairly reasonable accuracy close in,...not MOA for sure,..but,..minute of deer at 50 - 75 yards,....very doable.

Some folks find rifle chamber inserts to be very accurate when used for smaller game rounds.

They do work,..but ,...think about that intended use,..and get the one that is intended to do THAT job,......they were never intended for rapid reloading or continuous firing.

If you have never tried one,..you owe it to yourself to do so, before you pooh pooh the concept. YMMV
