Hi, I posted this at the S&W Forum but I figured THR gets more traffic so I'm posting it here, too.

I wanted to replace the factory rubber grips with wood ones on my S&W 1006. Now how do I exactly remove the grips? I punched out the obvious holding pin. The grips stayed and wouldn't budge. What else do I need to do? It's usually a straightforward affair replacing the grips on my other guns but this 3rd gen S&W stumps me. Thanks.

Flip the pistol over until you are looking down the magazine well. You should see a slot between the steel of the frame and the plastic of the grips. If you insert a flat-head screwdriver and pry away from the frame the grips should pop right off. It should not require much effort.

OK, I got it.

First, one has to drive out the pin at the bottom of the grip with a punch. Then using the same punch, press it through the hole at the bottom to release the tension of the hammer spring and the back of the grip should come out.

Ease the grip off the frame. The hammer spring and plug are liable to jump out, so be careful and wear eye protection. The Hogue kit comes with a part that holds the spring plug with the hammer spring. Once you see it you'll fugure out how it goes in.

Well, my S&W 1006 now wears the Hogue Rosewood checkered wood grips.

Here it is with the rest of my 10mm colletion. (L-R) Glock 20, S&W 1006, S&W 610, Dan Wesson Razorback.
