I bought some new wood grips for my New model Blackhawk and i cannot get the screw to catch the thread on the other side,i have even tried clamping the grips to make sure they were as tight as possible. The new screw is 15/16th's long and the seller has said that it should be long enough but it sure dont seem to be,has anyone seen grips that would take a longer screw than that?. I was starting to wonder if the roll pin that goes through the frame into each grip needed to be filed down a bit but i didnt want to do that before asking for opinions,i'm sure its just the screw but i'm open to suggestions. Thanks alot.

I just put some new grips on my blackhawk, I didn't measure the screw but it was about that long. It worked just fine on mine, but the screw head is recessed in there quite a bit. What brand grips?

Sounds like your aftermarket grips are too thick for the grip screw that was supplied. Check with your grip maker and see if he will exchange grip screws for one that is as long as you need.

I have a set of Privates grips, for my flattop 44 special, and the grip screw is 1 1/4" long. To me the wide smooth grips feel much better than the thin factory ones.

If you don't mind, where did you find your aftermarket grips.

Do not file the locating pin (roll pin in your case)...If the grips do not lay flat on your grip frame, send them back to the maker...

When I buy escuteons for grips, the screw comes wayyyy too long and needs to be fitted to each set of grips I make...

If the grips fit flush with your grip frame all the way around on both sides, contact the maker of your grips, and insist on a new full length screw...

Attach the grips, and mark the screw...Remove screw and cut it to length, and then file the end smooth without destroying the threads...

None of this should be your problem if you bought new grips...This should be the maker's responsibility to make right...

Unless you bought the wrong grips for your frame...

:D

ADDING:

Do you by any chance have the grip frame with the internal lock?

I echo Salmoneye's post.

The screw is either long enough or it isn't. And if the scales do not fit down flush to the frame in the corner with the roll pin then the holes in the scales are not deep enough. If the screw did catch it isn't going to pull them down to fit. Instead you'd just snap the scales in two. Or the screw would catch with half a thread then get tight and simply snap off the half thread holding all the load when you tried to tighten it.

Many things in life are of the sort where if you have to force it then something is wrong. ALMOST EVERYTHING related to guns fits into this category. Stuff involving houses and ships tends to simply require a bigger hammer often as not..... :D
