Anybody have any reviews or opinions on this rifle. Found a wholesaler who has them under $600 and it has gotten me a little interested in the big bore possible future Africa hunting trip bug. This round seems to have a good following and can be loaded light and work well on smaller animals like whitetails as well. I know these rifles are made in the Zastava plant and was wondering if these actions can withstand the .375H&H repeatedly. The rifle is supposed to be the Superior grade and is highly polished and the trigger is adjustable. Anybody own one? They are also available in .458 Win Mag, but I figured that would be an African round only.

Haven't gotten mine yet.......I'm ordering a Chuck Daly action for my .338-06AI project and and a LH barreled action in .30-06.
However, I do know that they are a true commercial 98 Mauser action built on German tooling. These guns were imported by Interarms and known as the Mark X before the trade embargo during the Balkan War. All the examples I've seen and handled were excellent.
Too bad they don't offer a LH version of the .308 length action.:(

stevelyn,

I think you will find that the .308 action is the exact same length as the .30-06 or the .375 for that matter. Daly's Mauser uses different magazine boxes to accomodate the cartridge lengths.

If you want a LH .308 length, controlled round feed action, I would suggest either a Montana 1999 or find a short action Model 70. The 70's were made for a few years in that configuration. Heck, spend the big bucks and buy a Dakota!

The problem with the .375 H&H is the 3.86" overall cartridge length. This means you either need a "magnum length" action or you need to hog-out a standard 98-length action to allow the cartridge to fit. This has been done many times by both factories and gunsmiths building .375s but I always preferred the proper action.

Now, this means that you must buy a more expensive magnum length rifle or start with such an action to build the gun. To some this isn't important and as I said there are many thousands of .375s that were built on standard actions out there.

The Daly will be a standard 98 action and will likely work just fine. I have a Zastava rifle and I like it. If you decide you want a proper magnum length Mauser the BRNO 550 is available. These may be slightly better quality than the Dalys, but not much. Mostly it's just a matter of greater length for the long .375 round.

Mark X

I have a Mark X barrelled action that I stocked on a B&C stock for Elk hunting. The action is not a true "mauser" in that the circle of iron infront of the bolt that a "true mauser" has is machined through on one side. Besides that, all other features are true mauser type action. Just like what is said above, it is not a manumg length action. I cannot eject loaded rounds out of this rifle. Would I take it on a dangerous game hunt. No. I would look at a CZ Brno if I were you, it will take 5 rounds in the magazine and is a true magnum mauser length action. Plus the CZ has usable iron sights. Best of luck.

I have a 'Whitworth" Zastava made .375 H&H that ejects loaded rounds fine. These actions are VERY strong and can digest anything the brass case can handle for many , many many rounds!

Thanks for the input, but I'm still not sure. Frankly I can't afford one of the high-end guns right now nor the big hunting trip either. Like to have it for future use. Also read where CD is about to lose these rifles to Remington and that Remington will sell the same thing for a higher price:eek: .
