Charlton Heston steps down in NRA

I just read in the newspaper that yesterday at the NRA convention, Charlton Heston stepped down.

Who is up for the slot next?


I'm voting for the Motor City Madman.
 
Yeah Ted Nugent is a good choice.

I'm not sure if he will have the Moses crowd appeal but overall Ted is a heck of a guy.
 
Not only is he famous - but more importantly he is not afraid to joust. He has handled himself and our cause very well every time he went on Politically Incorrect. He'll debate anyone.
Fearless.
 
I have met Nugent on a number of occassions. Personally I like Ted, his style doesn't offend me, but is a turn off for many others. His message resonates to a particular demographic of the hunting community...for that he has success...but he could have more.

I've also had the privilege to work with Chuck Heston on a number of projects...Heston's style is far more professional and classy. While many may disagree with his views, they are all impressed with his demeanor and presentation....with Ted they may disagree with his views but he doesn't win dissenters over with style like Heston.

Ted got his passion for bow hunting under Fred Bear...but his style is pure "rock-&-roll in your face". Ted is Ted, like him or not....but there comes a point when 40-60 year old "rock and rollers" never mature in their delivery and it doesn't come off very well. Would you buy a car or insurance from a mature individual who talked like teenager? Don't get me wrong, I just think his style needs a little work to reach "all parties". He does some great work with the kids and for the NRA...
 
I think Tom Selleck would have a mass appeal, and I've heard his name mentioned in the print media, with the corresponding rumor that he would be interested.

I'm a big Selleck fan but he is not much of a gunner.
He does have more poise and mass appeal than Nugent.

When I saw him get the anti gun screech from Rosie O'dougnut
Selleck handled himself well and did not go off on her.
At the same time he was not willing or able to debate the topic.

Nugent = gun knowledge, hunter, advocate. active politcally, redneck longhair rocker.

Selleck, pro-gun, not that politically active, nice guy, recognition/appeal, not strong on issues.
 
I agree with Rembrandt. Ted is great, but his delivery could be a liability. Just thinking off the cuff, Isn’t Tom Sellek (Not sure if I spelled the Last Name Correct) a pro-gunner? With a name like Magnum and his charm… He could be in the same class as Charlton Heston. Or the Beav, Jerry Mathers, he’s a shooter. It would be great if Arnold Swartzenager was pro-gun, but he’s related to the Kennedy Clan.

It is a shame that we lost another great American to this Alzheimer Disease, Regan, Heston, and many others…

As far as the issues, this can be learned and coached. Selleck might be a fine choice if he is willing...

....a word of caution, one must be careful of putting celebrities at the helm of your organization....name recognition will open doors previously inaccessable, but celebrities can also bring a lot of unwanted baggage (personal problems and scandal).

Many names have been brought up over the years, Louise Mandrell, Ollie North, Hank Williams Jr, retired military leaders, former politicians. Most of these people won't accept the position as long as they have carreer committments. Celebrities have to make money while their career is still in bloom, that may be a lifetime for some and a few years for others.

Don't under estimate the ability of the lesser known. The current President Kayne Robinson is one of the most savy political activists I have ever seen....you will not be disappointed.
 
I agree with a lot of what you say,

I would only ask us to consider our record in this battle to preserve rights granted to us by the constitution. There have been few reversals and a precious few wins, CCW proliferation is the big one, imo. I'm aware of marketing appeal in politics, but maybe it's time for less style and more guile.

Not sure if Ted's the man though. I'm not a fan or a hunter, but I like his enthusiasm. I watch his show on the sportsman channel all the time. I'm afraid his lack of bull and refusal to tolerate it in others might make him a tad too hot for the job though.

I am a fan of Tom's, but he was offered a golden opportunity to defend gun rights and demured. He was polite, but taken aback.

I like John Milus, but come to think of it, I can't think of a single famous champion of 2nd Ammendment rights, that hasn't stepped on a few toes over the years. Col. Cooper? :)

Exactly. If you were to go to a dinner party and you knew that the host's wife was a rabid anti, how could you be taken by surprise (as Selleck appeared to be) if she were to begin an attack on gun owners? :banghead:

My best guess? Kayne Robinson. geegee
 
Tom Selleck would be good for the TV and the media.

Ted Nugent would would make alot more noise, but this could be what the NRA and 2nd Ammendment needs. :evil:

Some that will put the old gun in the safe and pick up a AK or a AR.:neener:

Exactly what the RKBA needs... We need agression and we need our own offensive. And we need it now. Before the AWB gets front page. We take THEM to task. Get BILL O'REILY to read WHAT ONE MUST BELIEVE TO BELIEVE IN GUN CONTROL...
Get Rush to read that too... And Hannity...

Get our cause heard from OUR SIDE and shut down the Million Mamogram March... Get Protest Warriors out to every anti-gun rally.

We need some balls and we need it from the NRA.
 
Ted Nugent!

Ted Nugent should be a leader in the KABA movement. However Ted should not lead the NRA! He should create a splinter group. He would draw many with his blue collar intellectual style, and even better he would serve to make the NRA look moderate, and more appealing to politicians.

I like Ted Nugent for the same reasons I like to read the stories of Lazarus Long. Common sense intellectual brutality.:evil:
 
I agree the Nuge is the best choice. That would rule!!!

Best wishes to Chuck Heston. He's a great man who has done much to preserve our RTBA.

The fundamental problem is that for too long pro-gun groups have been fighting an uphill defensive battle, and as a result we keep losing little by little. ( A compromise is a loss, it's just a question of how much)
A Ted Nugent led NRA would be an in-your-face, don't care what you think, pro-gun, pro-freedom organization that would take the fight to the enemy.
Ya'll are deluding yourselves if you think Ted Nugent's tact would make us look bad. I have news for you, the reality is that in the eyes of the antis we already look bad just because we choose to excercise our right to own firearms. We need to stop being a bunch of pansies and fight back with the tenacity and tactics the antis use against us.:cuss: :fire:
Ted Nugent is intellegent, articulate, and speaks his mind. Never once have I ever heard him in a debate be apologetic, nor does he feel the need to sugar-coat facts to make them easier to swallow.
 
Ted Nugent is fine and all, but he would scare the living bejeezus out of my maiden aunt. You need someone in the position who isn't going to scare the very people you want to listen to your message.
 
Ted Nugent was on Gun Talk the other day. He wants Kayne Robinson to be the leader. Ted is one of his supporters and he really likes Robinson. So there you go. Sorry guys. :)
 
Selleck would be my first choice, Nugent is sure a ball of fire on the RKBA but if we're gonna go full force with a wildman at the helm, Why not get a true warrior to step up. let's get Commander Richard Marchinko USN (retired) to head it up! Certainly he can persuade people to do the right things! :what:
 
I hadn't thought of it before.

Ted Nugent is an enigma. He kills animals to get in touch with their spirit. I watch his show from time to time but not if there is anything else on.

Tom Selleck has always impressed me as a stand up guy. I think he handled himself pretty well with Rosie, tfsb.

I think that I would lean more heavily towards Louise Mandrell, wouldn't that be a blow to the anti's. An attractive, articulate woman as head of the NRA. Half their characterizations of us would go right out the window.
