Before work today, I went across the way to the creekbed where I normally shoot. Perfect little rise to catch my bullets, surrounded by wilderness, My Taurus PT840 in hand, I figured today would be a good day.

I loaded up one magazine with Remington UMC 180gr JHPs, and the other with Federal 180gr FMJs, for a little BS shooting. 10 rounds into the fun the weapon FTFs. I tried three more times to get it to go bang before I got worried. I dropped mag and cleared the chamber, and headed back to my house. I figured that my finicky little Taurus just had more gunk built up in the firing pin channel(When you're pressed for space and you have a litterbox near where you keep your guns, things get dirty fast). My dad said He'd take it apart and see what was wrong with it while I was at work.

Turns out there was brass chunks in the firing pin channel, and even some pieces stuck to the firing pin itself. After some hard thinking, I noticed something was off during my target practice. A few of the rounds fired(This was the UMC JHPs) there was what looked like sparks or flames coming from the firing chamber, seen through the narrow gap around the slid/firing pin carrier, and the hammer. I talked to my dad about it as we meticulously cleaned the weapon and he believes that I may have gotten a bad batch of ammo.

Are my suspicions true? Anyone out there have any problems using Remington UMC ammunition? I'm not about to blame the pistol just yet, but I'm a bit nervous about the whole situation. Would it be physically possible to have a batch of mismatched ammunition spit brass shavings back into the firing pin channel?

I've NEVER had a problem with this pistol that I couldn't fix myself, and I know for a fact that it doesn't mind the Federal ammunition one bit. But with the Remington stuff I've had one previous FTF that was fixed by another pull of the trigger, and now this. Both times were from bullets from the same box(I got a bulk pack because it was cheap and I didn't want to waste the good stuff on coffee cans)

As always, Help is appreciated. Thanks for listening.

Take a look at the primers on the cases from the two different manufacturers. Also take a look and compare the primers on the unfired rounds. You may be getting some primer piercing or set-back with loose or overpressure primers.

that's a bit of a problem. This pistol really wings out those spent casings, and with the underbrush where I shoot, I can't find them. Sucks because I was hoping to save them and have my dad teach me a little bit about reloading. Maybe I can ghetto-rig a bag around the weapon and run some through?
