a used police sig 9mm from J&G is a good range and bedside gun and very accurate and reliable, around $300

If you decide to go the used route. I would suggest checking around the local shops (especially those that might be LEO suppliers) I haven't bought a law enforcement trade in but I have seen some good deals on them. I usually see the best deals when I don't have any expendable cash.

there are used Ruger p95 and p89 at my local gunshop for 239, comes with 2 mags and cheap nylon holster. There are also used sigma's for 229 as well, you should be able to find one of the above for cheap

the sigma is cheap. 300 plus 50 dollar rebate. as for fun...depends on what kind of trigger you are used to. i enjoy shooting mine, but as you can see in other threads some do not.

The Sigma is an inexpensive self defense handgun with adequate SD sights. The 10 lbs.+ trigger pull & SD sights make it more difficult to perfect than other range guns like the Buckmark or Ruger Mark III. When I think of a range gun I usually think of a longer barrelled target gun with really good sights. After all you do set up targets down range and shoot at them every time you visit the range. The smaller the groupings the better the experience. Sigma handguns don't easily accomplish this feat without perfect trigger technique.

I've owned a Sw40ve for 2 years now. It took some time for me to master the Sigma trigger to where I could group a magazine in a nice neat group at distance. If you plan on using the Sigma to improve your technique then it would be worth the price. If you want a gun that you can shoot without perfect technique then I would look elsewhere...maybe a Buckmark or Ruger Mark III (or another gun with a light smooth trigger pull with really good sights).

Stoeger/(Beretta) Cougar 8000. My local shop sells them NIB for $369. I've seen very few used & they ranged from $225 to $300.

Excellent handgun. My 8000 was flawless with over 2500 rds fired.

The most fun you can have with a center fire handgun after the novelty of just perforating paper wears off is to use it in some sort of "run n' gun" handgun competition such as IPSC or IDPA. So you may want to consider being sure that whatever you get qualifies for IPSC's production category and/or IDPA's Stock Service Pistol (SSP) category.

Look for a used Tanfoglio. I picked one up last week for $250 and it is a tack driver. I was afraid the mag was worn out but I went through an entire 100ct of WWB without a single problem.

The Ruger P95 are always a good deal on a good shooting gun that can be had for around $350

I vote for A used EAA EZ9. That is .. If you can find a USED one. People dont tend to sell theirs once they buy :D. People commonly refer to them as Sig P226 clones. 15 rd mags. A big gun though

NIB sigmas are selling for $269 here, thanks to some S&W dealer incentives. The latest models have addressed the complaints of earlier guns.

But for plinking I'd look for an all steel gun. A heavy 9mm is a superb plinker. Maybe an Argie or Israeli Hipower.

I'll second the Recomendation for

The Rock Island Tactical in 9mm. I got mine from centerfire systems for $429 plus shipping. All together it cost me $460. If you want to keep it slightly under $400 you could get the GI version. Because of the all steel construction, recoil is very mild. There are better SD/HD guns like the Glock 17/19, which work every time and have higher capacities. The S&W 3rd gen guns are also great guns for the money.
