Cheap Pistols and My Buddies Harassment

You need to find new "friends" not a thing wrong with any of your arms or ammunition.

Some people are brand snobs.....my Dad would say " They have more money than good sense . "

Besides ...it's not what brand of gun you shoot that counts....it's how well you shoot that gun.
My dad was one of the best shots on running rabbits , woodcock quail and anything with wings...
he used a Sears Roebuck bolt action 16 ga. shotgun and very seldom missed . I only remember one time that he missed a flying bird , we were calling in crows.. one came zooming in to a distress call and he missedit and I stood up and nailed it with my Western Auto bolt action 410 .....I was so proud of that crow !
Take whatever you have and learn to shoot well...and don't listen to rich fools .

Indeed, it’s not the gun in the hand that matters, it’s the man behind the gun that does.

My friends and I have a variety of guns, some pricy and flashy... others plain and utilitarian. We have a great time shooting, and not once have we slagged on each other’s choice of firearm.

I suggest (like many others so far) that you find others to shoot with if they insist on keeping up the putting down. Life’s too short to not enjoy range time to the fullest, and it’s clear you’re not enjoying time with these guys when they do that.

Good luck, and stay safe!

Okay, I've got to know, are cheap pistols a danger to me and everyone else just because they are cheap? How about cheap ammo just cause it's on sale? My shooting buddies harass me constantly.

I'm currently using the following for either home defense or carry.

2 Mossberg 500 18.5" 12 gauge ($190 each from Wally World) with #1 Buckshot Reduced Recoil.($0.40 Round from Local Law Enforcement). Maybe 500 rounds each with no issues.

S&W SW9VE Sigma 9mm with 5 mags ($150 after rebate). 2000+ rounds with 2 failures to return to battery in first 50 rounds. I have no issue with the trigger.. Just roll the trigger like an old S&W M10. Currently shooting Federal Tactical Bonded 135+P ($0.20 Round Law Enforcement over run)

Taurus PT111 G2 9mm with 2 mags ($170 new). I shoot it well and other than failure to fully seat the slide when slingshotting the first round when new. It's been flawless through 1200 rounds. Currently shooting Federal 124 HST standard pressure (Reclassified $0.20 Round)

Ruger LCP Gen 2 .380 ($180 new)
500 rounds no issues.
Hornady American Gunner XTP ($0.40 Round).

S&W Shield .45 ($245 after $75 Rebate)
500 rounds no issue
Remington Golden.Sabre 230 Grain (Pre-Black Belt $0.36 Round)

Most everything was bought at Larry's unless otherwise noted.

I'm of the opinion as long as its been reliable and goes bang everytime it doesn't matter what I paid or even if it's a Taurus. My buddies are constantly harassing me for trusting my life to a $200 gun and $0.20 Ammo.

PS Some of those purchases go back over a decade so don't expect to pick up a new 500 for $190.
There is a huge difference between "purchased at bargain price", "inexpensive", and "cheap"...

A S&W 5904 bought with $250 is "a bargain", a Jimenez bought for $100 is "cheap".

Everything mentioned here also happens on the golf course, and in the clubhouse after the round.

Replace pistol with putter, and ammo with ball and you have the same ridiculous arguments. They sound just as silly, regardless of the setting.

You know that you've found a true friend when you find yourselves talking about the finer points of the trigger press or breath control when you're together, instead of endless scorekeeping using money...

Poorly maintained weapons as well as poorly and careless handling of weapons are the danger. Your "friends" sound like they may have a bit of egomania going on. Pretty is nice but if it is reliable and of decent accuracy that is what matters.

Bottom line: Life is too short to waste time on cheap guns. Note that I said cheap, not inexpensive. A friend of mine had three Keltecs. He told me he bought them because they were inexpensive. A few hundred rounds later, all three were broken and had to be replaced by the factory. Now, he won't buy Keltecs because they are cheap.

My father bought a Remington 788 back in the 60s because it was inexpensive. He fired hundreds, if not thousands, of trouble free rounds through it. I still have that rifle today. That 788 proved to be a good value.

At the end of the day, if you want to know if your firearms are cheap or a good value, keep shooting them and decide for yourself.

I've got a friend that likes the 788 so much he has one in every caliber (I guess you could say he collects them).

I think he has the only ones in .222 Rem, .30-30 and .44 Rem Mag I've ever seen.

The OP and me have a lot in common, I shoot inexpensive firearms as well. High quality, low price. All but 1 were bought used. Just picked up a LNIB ec9s for $140 and it has became my new favorite, I get more mileage out of those "inexpensive" guns.

I don't know about anyone else, but I get a real kick out of guns that are inexpensive, but shoot well. You know, ones that "punch above their weight," as it were.

Keep your guns and get new buddies. There is not a dern thing wrong with your choice of guns. I have a S&W SD9VE as my truck gun and it has never from day one bobbled or failed work a single time. An excellent gun at an excellent price. Mine was $325 OTD with a $50 rebate and two new mags from S&W. I wish I could find more deals like that.

It's your hand, not mine. I avoid any kinds of sketchy ammo.

As far as cheap vs expensive pistols. The target and the stopwatch determine that. But I don't shoot 1911's much anymore because of that.

If it fits your hand and puts lead where you aim it, it beats a pointy stick all day every day! There are also cheaper guns out there than what you own, think HiPoint. Better to have a gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
