Greetings,
First we kept the 10/22 at the UT range, but newbs had trouble juggling the two-handed bolt release on the 10/22. Yes, there is an aftermarket part for it, but not messing with that now.

Currently we have a Stevens semi-auto to replace the 10/22, but it has no bolt hold-open, so bad juju with newbies. I'm concerned that some idiot will fire 9 out of 10 rounds, and then put it back on the rack for some unsuspecting newb to pick up.

So, I'm planning to bring in my Marlin mag-fed semi. Bought it for $40 at a a pawnshop, so not worried about damaging it. But the previous owner took off the iron sights.

Since we have tons of bolt-action Olympic-type rifles with amazing iron sights, I'm thinking it would be fun to put a red-dot on our only semi.

I read the past THR threads, and found that I can buy a BSA 30mm red dot with mounts for grooved receiver for a little over $30. Is this a semi-decent option for a $40 rifle inside a 25yd indoor range?

Thanks, -MV

Okay, reading a few more threads:

Some folks say that Taso and BSA (and a few others) have essentially the same RD in the $30 range, others say that the Tasco is paralax-free while the BSA is not. Which is right?

Read a few complaints on shifting POI with both cheaper models, but plenty of satisfied customers too.

There's also the Tasco EZ red dot 1x20, selling for about $12 online:

Is the EZ just total junk, or pleasantly minimalist? This is just for a plinking rifle at the range, we have tons of serious competition rifles.

I dont know if I would buy a low end red dot offline. If you wind up having trouble with it right out of the box you may be in for a bad experience trying to swap it out or getting a refund. You probably wont have a hard time swapping out a BSA at your local wally-world; should you need to. That being said, I've had pretty good luck with 2 BSA products, a 30mm. RD , and a 3x9 illuminated scope.
