I'm looking at options for a cheek riser on a factory stocked Ruger American. The comb is way too low for the scope (which is mounted about as low as it will go. I don't want to swap to an At-One or something like that, so am looking at options to add something to raise the comb.

I am torn between getting a basic kydex riser and drilling the stock, making foam riser and using wrap to secure it, or getting a strap on style riser pad/ammo holder thing. I am leaning towards one of the options that doesn't alter the stock at least to begin with, but if the kydex riser is the way to go I'm not against drilling a couple of holes.

There are probably lots of folks that have tried various options, so I thought I would throw it out there: what have you used that you like (or don't like)?

Ive done a few different ones. On the cheal i like the stretchy cartridge sleeves with foam shoved under them.

The strap-ons work similarly and well also.

Kydex risers are nice, and easily adjustable, but more expensive and invasive. There are also bolt down comb risers that connext to the top of the stock, and those can be a good option....ive used these less than the others tho.

I think I have a chunk of closed cell foam somewhere, I might try to fashion something out of that, which could then be covered with a cartridge sleeve for aesthetics. At a minimum it would give me a template for how much height I need. Just roughly measuring it seems like somewhere between three quarters to one inch will be about right.

I haven't had great luck with elastic cartridge carriers staying put, even without the torque a cheek riser would put on it. But it seems like one of the strap type ones would stay put OK, especially with some strategically placed velcro on the stock to help out and the separate foam cheek piece secured to the stock with duct tape.

Another option I came across is the Titan universal riser: https://victorcompanyusa.com/titan-universal-cheekrest. The price isn't crazy if it works well, but I can't seem to find a good answer on whether that would fit the comb on a Ruger American. I wouldn't want to spend that money and drill the holes (even though they are much smaller and less obtrusive than the holes for an adjustable riser) unless I know it will fit. It is a long shot, but has anyone on here used one of these? Roughly what is the radius of the curve where it goes over the comb?

I use one similar to this on my RAR. The one I have was an accessory for the M24 sniper rifle. I like the pocket on the side- I can store my hunting license in it, and when I am finished hunting for the day I can put my magazine in it after I clear my rifle.

^ I have something like that on one of my straight stocked rifles. It's not permanent, has a nice soft microfiber pad on the cheek side, and the pocket is a nice feature. I keep my DOPE card in it. The rifle is a .223 so the shell holders are iffy for hunting; I've lost a couple rounds and don't use it anymore.

I see a lot of people add an adjustable cheek riser to their Ruger American. However, every single one has had a jacked-up AR mount.

With the newer rails being 1/4" taller i want them with any 30mm tube scope or a 1" in medium rings.
Could just be the way I hold my head tho, my dad seems fine with his and I really dont like how little contact ive got...no one whos shot the Americans ive had, has complained either

Agreed, the rail they put on the Ruger American is overly high. The rings I have on there are about as low as I can go and have the ocular bell clear the rail. An AR mount on top of that tail would be crazy high. As it is it is just a little too high to live with so if I am messing with it at all I would prefer to make it the right height.

I'm leaning towards that victor universal riser because it looks like it will have the least stuff to catch on clothes/bags/etc, and doesn't have anything on the bottom of the stock that will interfere with using a rear bag rest. Haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet though, got pulled away for some work stuff.
