Chicago Murder rates plummet

"Top Cop Streetlight McCarthy claims his policing strategies should be credited."

Who knows, maybe they should be ;) (I'll go out on a limb and guess patrols were down somewhat during the worst weather). UNSC's right, we'll 'find out' come spring time...can't wait :(

Anyone else have data yet on what crime in general has been doing there? Violent/non-violent crime doesn't correlate as close as you'd think, but I'll bet a weather-related reduction would drop both simultaneously.

I'm not sure such a 'grand experiment' of arming the peasantry against the local crime culture has ever played out outside of revolution (in which there is no one to reign in or direct their action). It could be as terrible as many other violent insurrections, initially, and I'm quite certain there would be little appetite among citizens in these areas to take on the responsibility of winning their own safety. (Other factors that don't matter to the people involved in this effort are the lack of trust in the poor to accomplish anything for themselves by elites, and the unlikelihood of a large-scale coordinated effort being implemented that would prevent the unsavory elements from simply relocating to less hostile waters.)

Well, there just so happens to be....

Vigilantes formed up, started running patrols against the drug cartels.. Jan 13 the government of Mexico was like "please stop"...

citizens ignored them...

Now the government says "OK screw it, it's legal, report to the Military with some semblance of discipline"

Thanks Hirundo. Was wondering how long it'd be, before someone had to draw on a bad guy somewhere.

Obviously the change has nothing to do with new gun laws. It's all because of the superb leadership of the Mayor. (At least I'll bet he claims that!):D

In our two major war zones ,mainly Philadelphia Pa. and Wilmington De., the daily shootings seem to increase in the warmer months.
My belief is that our failed Justice System contributes absolutely NOTHING to a decreased shooting/murder/homicide rate. If a reduced rate DOES occur, it's probably due to weather conditions or moon phase etc.

Murders have been going down steadily in Chicago since a high in 1992:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Chicago

VERY GOOD!

People did the same thing with crime in Texas and Texas CHLs, noting various drops since going into effect in 1996. As I like to point out, the law was so powerful and had such a dramatic impact on crime that it was able to not only reduce crime for several years prior to 1996, but reduced crime in areas outside of Texas including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles GMAs as well as in numerous states at the same time.

I now see that where Texas ownership of suppressors has skyrocketed with the allowance of suppressors for hunting, that shootings have been reduced in Chicago. That can't be spurious and unrelated correlations...Texas CHLs and suppressors -> crime and shooting declines in Chicago, right? LOL.

Still, how many carry licenses have hit the streets?

If their presence does indeed play a part, it's probably more because the thugs that would be deterred by the concept of "my-next-victim-might-be-armed" don't know how few there really are. They've just likely heard the same hype we did back in 1987 here in Florida that "everyone will be armed, and the streets will be awash in the blood of the innocent..."

Doubtful. In Chicago, most of the shooters and victims would never qualify for a permit to begin with. The great majority of shootings there are likely gang and/or drug related. It's more likely "turf issues" have been worked out than CCWs making an impact.

If we are going to be credible and honest, then the CCW permitting has nothing to do with murder rates going down among criminals. They wouldn't apply or be deterred. They weren't shooting it out with middle class suburban residents in the front yard, they were shooting each other on the streets in their 'hood.

Making a case CCW had any effect would be as spurious as making the case for Texas silencers, or banning rifles with detachable magazines and a shoulder thingy that goes up. Since neither are used in those 'hood shootings, laws against them would be ridiculous. Which is our current appreciation everywhere else.

We may see a reduction in crime elsewhere, but those neighborhoods aren't going to see any fundamental changes as both parties to a gunfight are already armed with a predeliction to using them. It's not a CCW issue - it's a gang warfare issue. When the other non gang residents start targeting the perps, then they will see direct pressure and simply move to greener pastures. It's really a local problem of intimidation, and nothing is going to change much until the victims make an effort to own their own neighborhood.

I think it's interesting how "Streetlights" has backed himself into a corner on this one; if they take the credit for the murder rate dropping, they logically have to take the blame when it rises again; and I'm fairly certain there will be more banger activity in 98 degree heat than -20 degree cold.

Anyone really think he'll stand up and say, 'Yep, this is all on us; bad policing.' ?

If so, want to buy a bridge? :)

Well violent crime is down about 25-30% in Flint Michigan
and down about 20% range in Detroit.
Nothing has changed here in Michigan regarding carry laws.
I blame it on the weather.

As far as I am concerned, negligible statistical effect helps our cause. If the debate is framed as how much freedom are we willing to give up in order to have the "security" of less guns, and there is no statistical effect on security, why should we have a law that restricts our freedom for no benefit?

I credit PETA for the drop. Less fur = less crime in the winter time. Joe Namath shows up in a full length coyote and bad behavior follows. Think about it man!

I suspect that the vast majority of murders in Chicago are criminal on criminal, gang violence and innocent bystanders. I see no practical way that concealed carry by law abiding citizens will reduce incidents of gang members shooting each other. Even if legalization of concealed carry could reduce murder rates in some areas(highly doubtful), an effect in Chicago seems highly unlikely.

My favorite part in that whole article:

"The man is not facing charges as police search for the two males, described as a tall male and a short male. Those two face charges."

This has to be one of my all-time favorite descriptions of bad guys: "a tall male and a short male". And they "face charges"! What a hoot!

But good on the guy for defending himself against them!

Reading that reminded my why I left there 3 years ago. The corrupt politics is so out of control that everyone just thinks it's business as usual there. Mr Obama also cut his teeth there.

If I remember correctly, Chicago does not submit their crime figures to the FBI for their official statistics. I believe Chicago releases their own. I think they are the only city (or state) to not submit these figures. That state's politics is sickening. Look at how many of their top politicians are in jail or have been recently. Amazing is the only word that comes to mind. That city is out of control.

Between 12-1-77 and 2-28-78 in Chicago, over 80 inches of snow fell, yet there were over 800 murders that year. Can't seem to find out how many were in the first quarter, but that would be interesting to find out, since so many are blaming the weather. If there were more than 60 or 70, I wouldn't be quite so quick to lay this good news on weather alone.

Sure it has. Been going down in Michigan rather steadily ever since shall issue, and shall issue has been steadily improving every year. Wayne county, for example, now boasts probably a quarter of the time needed to get your CPL, as opposed to inception.

There were 2 huge snowstorms that year, if I remember correctly. I think one was New Year's Eve. Also, cold keeps the animals inside. Snow is different. Try to find the data from July and Aug that year. I think that's what pushed it way up.

While it is pretty safe to assume that IL's new CCW regs had little or nothing to do with a downturn in Chicago's crime rates, is there anyone out there who doubts that the corrupt politicians of the state and their supporting media wouldn't have jumped all over CCW as a cause if crime rate had ticked up a bit?
