Officials cite NIU, Tinley Park killings

Mayor Richard Daley and other elected officials pointed Tuesday to the fatal shootings at Northern Illinois University and a Tinley Park clothing store as they announced their annual push for gun control legislation in Springfield.
Initial data from last year indicate that 75 percent of the homicides in Chicago involved guns, Daley said.
"As I've said many times, too many neighborhoods in our city are still terrorized by gang and drug thugs who threaten our families, our children and our quality of life," the mayor said.
The package of gun proposals includes several that have been introduced repeatedly in Springfield in the past but failed after meeting heavy opposition from gun rights advocates. They range from a measure that would require state licensing of gun dealers to a proposal to ban semiautomatic assault weapons and .50-caliber rifles.
"If we can't adopt some sensible legislation in the aftermath of what we just recently experienced in DeKalb [home of NIU], I have no idea when this is going to happen," said David Pope, Oak Park's Village Board president.
But after the news conference, state Sen. John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat and longtime gun control advocate, acknowledged they would not have prevented the NIU shootings. Authorities have said the NIU gunman legally obtained the weapons he used.
