Egad that came on fast. Quite shocking. Yes, this will bode well for gun owners vis a vis SCOTUS. I knew there was *some* reason I didn't vote for Kerry.

RIP Mr. Rehnquist. :( You've done good work, sir.

RIP, Justice Rehnquist.

Expect an even more bitter fight in the senate. If John Roberts is now being called "extreme," Schumer & Co. are going to pull out all the stops.

'Course, Ruth Bader Ginsberg is still sitting there because Republicans back in the early 90's got duped into the notion of "bipartisan cooperation."

I'd rather see Thomas than Scalia as CJ. Scalia only supports small government when it suits his needs. I don't think he is philosophically consistent on that point as much as Thomas.

I'd like to see a Chief Justice Thomas and Justice Ron Paul.

I'd like to see a Chief Justice Thomas and Justice Ron Paul.
Now THAT is a hot idea. Alas I don't think that Dr. Paul is a possibility, but all of us who believe in the Constitution (small group that we are) would be delighted to see him on the bench. As as the others have said, I would rather see CJ Thomas than CJ Scalia. Thomas is a lot better than Scalia.

JUST PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT PICK GONZALES. In fact please do not pick anyone who is or was a prosecutor. Prosecutors are agents of the government. The SC is supposed to be a check and balance against government power. A prosecutor would not be able to take on that role and should not be on the SC.

May he rest in peace. Nothing matters in death, politics or otherwise. Say a prayer for his family and for his soul.

Don't let this become a polictical diatrobe, there are family and friends grieving at his loss. Say a prayer for them and him.

I was just reading down the new threads...

"new orleans, looters, busses, superdome, rehnquist dead.. yawn nothing new..."

"hey wait a second..." :what:

This is quite a shocker. Everyone expected rehnquist to keel over eventually, but I dont think any of us were expecting it to happen before Robert's was confirmed. Then again, its not like we have a say in whether or not we die.

He was a good judge and a good conservative judge at that. I cant wait to see who Bush nominates to replace him. A Kerry presidency at this point would have been a disaster. :uhoh:

Edit: btw, I vote Thomas for Chief Justice, since he is the only one who seems to bother reading the constitution. He got Kelo right and he got Raich right. Every other justice missed one of those cases by a wide margin except Rehnquist and O'Connor, and even they made the right choice for the wrong reason.

I vote Janice Rogers Brown or Ron Paul as the the new justice.

I doubt Ron Paul would have much of a chance; but I wouldn't mind seeing Alex Kozinski or Eugene Volokh nominated. However, I think both have spoken their mind too often and too publicly to ever have a chance of making though the Senate gauntlet.

Someone on DU has posted:

5. Bet he died days ago and they are just announcing it now to try
and take the heat off bush. One man has died, well guess what, thousands have died and more are still dying. :banghead:

Janice Brown would be great. Rehnquist was a good judge. But Thomas is the best. Yes, your reference to the Raich case and Kelo case was right-on. Those were the two clearest test cases. Please let it be Thomas! If we get TWO real Constitutional judges on the court now, that will be the only thing that matters about this presidency. If that happens, then maybe it's time to a) push hard on the Robert Stewart machiengun case, and get the 1986 FOPA MG-ban thrown away and b) push through some 2nd Amend cases and get a ruling on that. Those two things together might be a tremendous help to those of us stuck in California or NY, where our state governments have contempt for the 2nd. Maybe a SCOTUS ruling would clarify what the 2nd means: it's an individual right (subject to non-burdensome regulation) to own infantry weapons. That's it. It's clear. It applies throughout the land and, because it's in the constitution, it IS within Federal power to force the states to accept it.

The prospect of the Democrats agonizing over three Supreme Court nominations is delicious. They will be so tied in knots that they won't know which way to turn.

wow......may we live in interesting times........This President has his hands full!!!

You're right. If you want to be a success in this PC world, you should walk around with a zipper on your mouth. Think to yourself, but give the proper speech at all times, if you have to talk. That's what we've been reduced to. This world's been handed over to Herman & Jackson's trove of fairies.

Really, who cares what they're saying over at the Democratic Underground?

It's like some of you have this hideous fascination with what goes on over
there, and cant quit lurking, even though you may despise the lot of them.

What's with that, anyway? Doesnt seem real healthy to me...

Washington DC:

News that Chief Justice William Rehnquist has died hit this city like an indictment for taking bribes.

Not yet fully up to speed on the "Bush caused the hurricane and caused all the looting" charges, leading Democrats are rushing to change gears.

Reporters interviewed Senator Ted Kennedy at his Washington crib (sorry, house), Saturday about the coming Supreme Court nominee.

Senator Kennedy was found in his garage donning his slightly booze-stained non-shining armor and hoisting his considerably water-stained banner.

Kennedy stated that "Bush's nominee is an extremest Right-Wing neo-Nazi, who will roll back the clock to a dark day when blacks were second class help, Oops I mean citizens, and women will again resort to the back seat of cars, Oops I mean back alleys".

"I find his nominee totally unacceptable, whoever the Fascist is".

Senator Charles Schumer was found in New York in a meeting with some people in flashy suits named Carmine and Guido.
Snapping shut a suitcase full of money, Senator Schumer stated that the nominee could expect fair hearings, as long as he released his kindergarten records and the results of his last rectal examine.

Ralph Nees of The People For The American Way, said that Bush's nominee would be burned at the stake, as soon as he or she could be identified, and they wouldn't be too particular about how well the identification was.
They'd settle for any scapegoat.

George Soros and Cindy Sheehan announced that in order to bring peoples attention to Bush's attempt to become the Ultimate Fuhrer of Amerika, they would be married in a ceremony to include an anti-war wedding march sung by Jane Fonda, Joan Baez, Ozzy Osborne, and Daffy Duck.

I just ran across this quotation. Lots of wisdom here.

"When you are young and impecunious, society conditions you to exchange time for money, and this is quite as it should be. Very few people are hurt by having to work for a living. But as you become more affluent, it somehow is very, very difficult to reverse that process and begin trading money for time."
